Tangente Platinum Pro Evo Brake Pad

So, you're inevitably wondering what's new in the world of Zipp? Simply put, everything. From its wheels to its brake pads, 2013 sees a complete reinvent across the board. And for the Tangente Platinum Pro Evo Brake Pads, Zipp has improved nearly every aspect over its prior iterations.

Now, when we think of brake pads, we're forced to examine their explicit function -- braking. And, as we all know, the functionality of braking is measured by braking power -- something that has long plagued carbon braking surfaces, both tubular and clincher. Challenging this preconception, Zipp increased the surface area of the new Tangente pads, accordingly increasing their braking power by around 10%. Running a close second to braking power is that of pad durability, and this where Zipp achieved the largest headway.

The new Tangente pads feature a 1mm reduction in their width from the holder. This increases clearance for larger tires, wider rims, and the ever-growing integrated brake systems. Additionally, while the width is decreased, the pads' radial height is increased. This plays into the larger surface area that we mentioned, accordingly increasing the pad life of the Tangente. And just importantly, this new dimensional design spreads out heat over a larger area of the braking surface and rim. So, basic logic tells us that a lower rim temperature will increase the braking effectiveness and durability of the pads.

You'll also find that these Tangente pads feature a new groove design. Why? Well, Zipp says that the grooves improve rim temperatures and also braking power in wet conditions. Essentially, the grooves sweep water off of the rim, while also channeling air over it. So, you can expect a drier and cooler braking surface in nearly any conceivable condition.

The Zipp Tangente Platinum Pro Evo Brake Pads are available in the color Grey and in both Campagnolo and Shimano/SRAM brake pad holder compatibilities. Please note that each set comes with two pads, enough to replace one brake. These pads have not been approved for aluminum braking surfaces.

Good Stopping Power, Long Life

I've put it through the wringer

This is actually the first rim brake pad I’ve ever used as all my previous riding has been on disc brakes. I have a Felt AR FRD with Zipp 404 NSW wheels, and I’ve put over 1,500 miles into my brakes and I’m just now approaching the point that my front pads are getting close to the wear line. I’m anticipating a need to replace in the next 100 miles or so. I do the vast majority of my braking power application in the front, so I expect the rear to last at least twice as long. I also ride on flat to moderately hilly terrain, so I’m not doing a lot of speed scrubbing on aggressive downhill runs. In total I’ve been very satisfied with the stopping power, and on the rare occasion that I’ve needed to come to a rapid halt I had all the stopping power I needed. I have full confidence in the stopping power, so I’m grateful that the pads which are specifically recommended (and don’t void the warranty on my wheels) provide a good braking experience.

These pads DO NOT fit the new Campagnolo Chorus 12 speed brake calipers. They WILL work on the 11 speed. The new Campy 12 speed Chorus calipers take a Shimano type of pad with the slot cut out in the back held in place by a screw on the pad holder. The 11 speed Campy have a square cut out that slides into the holder without a screw attachment. So just know that if you have the 12 speed that these will not work and you probably can use the Shimano.

Carbon pads have come so far in the last

I've used it several times

Love these. Once upon a time I was apprehensive about braking on my carbon rims. Not anymore. I should have bought these years ago.

These brakes are great for my zipp 302's. The stopping is powerful and they work great. No issues so far!

Zipp and Stop in the wet

I've put it through the wringer

I'm 190cm, 95kg so a bit of mass to slow down. I run these on Zipp 202's and 303's, non "showstopper" braking surface. I ride in the wet a lot and have got lots of fast descents to deal with as well as the normal "urban warfare". I'm running them with both Avid Shorty Ultimate's on my 'cross bike and Shimano Dura-Ace Dual Post on my Trek Domane. I'm a pretty aggressive rider and I'll say that if you are running Zipp Rim Brake wheels you want these pads. Wet or dry they offer great feel and consistent braking performance. I've not had a situation yet where I was wanting for more stopping power in the wet, they sweep the water on the rim away very quickly. You can get right into them without worrying about a sudden "grab" and loss of control. In the dry I can go 10,000km on a set, especially in the rear, may have to change the front if I'm doing a lot of elevation change where you really need to scrub speed a lot. Winter riding on the 'cross bike tends to wear them more quickly but I like my Zipps so I'm ok with that.

Make Your Zipp Wheels Stop Real Good

Zipp's latest standard composite brake pad for their carbon wheels. As Trevor pointed out below, these new ones seem to be a lot more reliable and consistent in the rain. I've had no issues with these so far and ride carbon wheels daily. Certainly pricey when it comes time to change out pads (80 dollars for front and rear), but well worth the cost.

Is this a set of 2 or 4?

Is this a set of 2 or 4?

Hi, It is a set of 2. That's one wheel, or 1/2 of a bicycle's worth.

Big Improvements from Year's Past

I've put it through the wringer

Braking with carbon rims was once a bit stressful; you really had to be on top of your game to stay safe. Along with improvements in carbon rims in general, you feel every bit of improved braking power with these new pads from ZIPP. These pads give you piece of mind. Though the new groove design may feel like more marketing hype, that design is the real deal. Braking in wet weather has never been so smooth. These pads dry out super quick, and slowing down or coming to a complete stop is much more consistent and reliable in the rain. With the new design, I've also found they're much quieter than brake pads of the past. Durability thus far has been consistent with most high end carbon brake pads. Nothing life changing in that department, but they're certainly in the upper echelon of durability.

I'm looking for replacement pads for my pair of Cannondale C1 brakes. Would these be what I want or do you suggest something else? Kool-Stop Replacement Brake Pads - Set of 2 One Color, SHIMANO/SRAM - KSP0002-ONECOL-SHI

The Zipp Tangente Platinum Pro Evo Brake Pads are a phenomenal brake pad, for carbon rims. I think you'll be pleased with this pads performance over the C1, Zipp has truly hit a home run with stopping power in any condition with carbon rims. I do not recommend any other brake pad over these for carbon rims. Please not these brake pads are only compatible with Shimano or Campagnolo brake calipers.
