The 54mm depth earns its place on gravel because Zipp shaped the rim profile to integrate directly with approved gravel tires, eliminating the sidewall gap that creates drag at the rim-to-tire junction. That integration is also why the 303 XPLR S runs exclusively with approved tires. The Goodyear XPLR Slick and XPLR Inter are specifically developed for this rim, and the system performance depends on that match. It is a constraint worth knowing before you build around it, but it is also what makes the aero and compliance story possible at this rim width and depth.
