'Tis the season for mud, dirt, snow, and visions of disc brakes on cyclocross courses. Unfortunately, not all of us have the cash flow for those carbon disc tubulars we've been drooling over as we prep for 'cross season, so we're in danger of being stuck lamenting another year on flat-prone clinchers. This year, Zipp steps in to save the day with the 30 Course Disc Brake Clincher Road Wheel. Headlining as Zipp's first-ever tubeless-ready clincher wheelset, this set of aluminum hoops boasts a heap of Zipp awesomeness paired with the flat-resistance and low-pressure options of a tubeless setup. This flexible combination tackles cyclocross, gravel, or road rides with a much more budget-friendly price than its carbon fiber siblings.
The rim profile on the 30 Course is heavily influenced by Zipp's carbon 202 rim, clocking in just 8mm shallower than the 202 at 26mm. Zipp claims that borrowing shape and design from the 202 gives the 30 Course better stability in crosswinds than other rims of similar depth. Its wide stance easily accommodates a range of tire widths to accommodate different riding styles and surfaces. The wider rim also gives tires a solid platform to increase stability by reducing the side bulge effect found in tires mounted to narrower rims. You'll zoom across the course with confidence that these wheels will carve through grassy switchbacks with ease and propel you to the next set of barriers.
At the center, Zipp uses the same hubset found in this year's carbon lineup. Its 77 hub anchors the front wheel and its 177 hub sits in the rear. Featuring a new platform and graphics for 2016, these hubs boast increased bearing protection over their previous versions and are ready to roll without any pre-load adjustment. The rear hub is compatible with a separately sold XD driver body to allow for a wider cassette range of up to 10-42t if you're stepping up to SRAM's one-by 'cross drivetrains. Driver bodies can be swapped out without having to re-dish the wheel. Each wheel includes an updated quick release skewer with a widened handle that provides leverage when installing the wheel and clean lines as it sits close to the frame when closed. For additional versatility, both hubs are thru-axle compatible with a quick, tool-free swap of the end caps.
The Zipp 30 Course Disc Brake Clincher Road Wheel can be set up as tubeless, or run with traditional tubes. Each wheel comes with Zipp thru-axle end caps, a quick release skewer, 700cx20mm rim tape, and a Zipp tubeless valve. The rear wheel comes with a 1.85mm spacer for compatibility with 10-speed cassettes and is available with either a Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo 11-speed compatible freehub body. Zipp recommends a maximum rider weight of 250lb for these wheels.
