Free to ride.

If you need coverage and technical features that'll see you through dawn to dark rides, the Yeti Cycles Freeland Shorts are your best friend on the trail. Stash pockets are generous and easy to access while riding, preventing any needless dismounts that'll stall you from covering ground. However, that's from from the extent of Yeti's attention to both detail and quality.

The Freeland shorts are constructed from a tough, yet malleable stretch polyester that facilitates excellent maneuverability around the bike. So, negotiating technical sections of trail is now a far more simplified affair. This characteristic is further enhanced by a rear stretch panel and a wide waistband with both tech webbing and silicone grippers. This system comfortably holds the Freeland in position without inciting the risk of either bunching or pinching.

And when the sun heats things up, you needn't worry, as Yeti took ample measures to keep you cool. The shorts feature zip venting at the thighs and stitched rivet vents to accomplish this goal. Adding to this, the shorts' fabric was selected for its lightweight and breathable characteristics. In terms of pedaling comfort, Yeti enhanced the material by incorporating glide patches that reduce, if not eliminate, irritation. In addition to this, Yeti has also treated the shorts' material with a DWR finish. So, with its added water-repellency, you'll remain protected when the weather changes up on the mountain.

The Freeland is also compatible with Yeti's Liner, which features an Italian-made chamois, for those that need the highest level of long-ride comfort.

The Yeti Cycles Freeland Shorts are available in the color Black and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large. Please note that Yeti bases its size from the waist. So, a Small is a waist size 30, Medium is a 32, Large is a 34, X-Large is a 36, and XX-Large is a 38.

  • Adjustable waist
  • Compatible with Yeti’s Liner, sold separately
  • Multiple stash pockets
  • Zippered vents
  • DWR treatment

Well made, fits small

Pricey but well made, great material choices and I expect to get a lot of miles out of them. I have tried these and the Yeti Enduro short and Yeti must be throwback sizing because I haven't encountered an xxl pair of shorts this small since 2006.

    Team Yeti

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After grabbing a yeti, had to pick up some shorts as well. Love these things. Really like the material and length. A lot of protection for how light they feel

    A+

    Yeti-licious

This pants are seriously great. Like other reviewers said, moving in these are a breeze. They move with your body, and with the little pull tabs on the side, they are as snug as you want them to be. Also, I love the zips on the legs that act as vents! While there isn't actually mesh on the inside, its nice to vent out during a huge uphill push. There is only one thing alluding the 5 star rating though: and its that these run small. I am usually a large in everything; I have about a 35in waist, which means I should be at the small end of the large size. However, these are snug, with those tabs pulled all the way out. If you are a 36 or above in the waist, definitely go the XL, cause they may be too small for you.

    Are they worth $100?

when you look at regular shorts vs mountain bike shorts you always wonder what makes them worth it. As I look at the Yeti shorts vs most mtb shorts, I wonder what makes them worth $100.
I picked up a pair to try and find out what makes them so great. First off these shorts fit very nicely and thats something that i rarely find with shorts. Secondly, you can move incredibly well!! The built in belt is not need for me since the fit is so snug but it doesn't restrict motion whatsoever. the material is durable, but not bullet proof (already tore a hole in one cargo pocket from a tree branch encounter)
Last thing i'll comment on is the vents. The vents are direct openings that are horizontal across the thighs... no nets... just an open hole. which I thought was quite strange. But after riding on a hot a day and opening those vents up, it all made sense.
Long of the short... These shorts are worth $100. I would buy a pair for every day of the week if I could afford it.
If you have any questions about these shorts or are on the fence about buying them, email or call me and we can chat about it.

    Absolutely No Abrasion Resistance

    • Size Bought: large

These shorts look great, have zippered pockets and are breathable. However, I only owned these four days before they became unusable after one incident. I got about 2 hours of riding time before crashing and the right side cargo pocket completely detached along the seams. The shorts were well on there way to being torn in half. The material is not beefy, like some of the other riding shorts I have owned.

    Matching my Yeti SB6

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love my Yeti SB6 so much I wanted to match with these super comfortable and stylish shorts. The shorts are durable, water resistant, and have plenty of pockets. I highly recommend these shorts for any one into mountain biking.

    Matching my Yeti SB6

    Yup these are nice

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I love these shorts, they are light and very comfortable. I was slightly disappointed that they were not padded when I purchased them but they were still a great buy. The short runs long like most biking shorts do but the lining is very smooth which makes for a comfortable ride. Also the vents on the front of the short is in a great place to provide enough ventilation.

    Decent short, bad vents

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

The good - construction quality, material, and overall product.
The bad - zippered vents are kinda useless , they provide no ventilation during pedaling action and there is no mesh backing to the vent holes.
The ugly - still trying to find a well thought out and designed short!!!! grrrr (Dakine Synclines from 2010 seem to be the best I have used/found)

    These are the best~!

This is my second year riding in these. They are amazing! Super comfortable, and the leg zips come in handy when it's hot out. My shorts haven't shown any signs of wear even though I've put them through the wringer and crashed in them. A+ would buy again.

    Great shorts!

I was tired of dealing with my overly simple, cheaply made Dakine shorts, so I decided to upgrade. I love these shorts, they have nice built in cinch straps and roomy pockets. I just discovered the vents as well, pretty rad. The fit is great. I wear a 34 waist and I bought the large, they are perfect, no belt required just a little pull on the built in straps and I am good to go.

    One of my favorites

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

    • Size Bought: XXL

I prefer loose and long shorts these fit the bill. Lightweight, breathable, with 2 open front pockets, 2 zipper side pockets, and adjustable waist. I think Yeti shorts run on the small side; These XXLs fit similar to a L Pearl Izumi Launch and a L Pearl Izumi Impact shorts that I also own and love. I'm 5'10", 220 lbs, ~38" waist, ~44 hip.

    Nice shorts

Nice bike shorts. I'm 5'10" 160 lbs, 33 waist and 30 inseam- went with large size. Good fit. The turquoise color isn't as bright or obnoxious as you might think. Happy with purchase so far.

    Comfy

These shorts provided the exact fit I was looking for. The length feels just right, and they are overall extremely comfortable. I'm really glad I picked up a pair of these, and may even buy a few more to expand my bike wardrobe.

      Only MTB Shorts You Need

I have riden several times with these, and they are the best MTB shorts I have owned. I wear the Yeti Como Liner with these, and they are a great pair for any avid MTB. Comfortable, yet can handle the usage. Zippers are very durable. There are plenty of pockets for storage. Strongly encourage these for your next pair of shorts.

      Nice!

      • Fit: True to size

I've only ridden a couple of times with these, but so far, they are great. The material doesn't seem stretchy, but there is no restriction of movement at all. This includes making climbs or trying to bomb a long downhill. The pants hang over the knees and don't interfere with knee pads at all. The side zip pockets are good sized, and the additional hand pockets are deep enough that they are actually useful. The shorts breathe well and are pretty cool, even at temps in he 70s.

I was worried about the sizing since some reviews said that the shorts run small. If anything, the waist is larger than expected. If you have doubts, get a soft tape measure and actually measure your waist. You might be surprised by what clothing manufactures are "telling" what your waist size is.

Tried on a couple shorts these are king

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These shorts are fantastic! They contour to your riding form perfectly and have all the bells and whistles you would want without any excess.

      Go to shorts

      • Size Bought: Small

Yeti knocked it out of the park with these shorts! These are by far some of the most comfortable bike shorts I've ever had. They are light weight while still being durable, shedding water and mud. Plenty of pockets that are well placed and not cumbersome like a lot of shorts in this category. I'll be picking up another pair in the Yeti blue to put into the rotation.

      So comfortable!

      • Fit: Runs small

These are great for quick trail rides or long ones too. I'm normally not a fan of shorts with a ton of pockets, but can't seem to take these off! The pockets are well thought out, and very functional while on the bike.

      Killer Shorts, multipurpose

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL

Have used these for many trail rides in north central AZ, on very hardpacked terrain, lots of red rock and sandstone, all plants here are like barbwire, they shred clothes. These shorts have been beat and used as every day wear shorts, they are that good. Besides MTB, they have been used hiking, running, swimming, hot tubs, pools, creeks, lakes, taken several good spills, the shorts saved my upper thighs and rear end from getting seriously abraded. They have faded after a hard spring. summer, & fall and many washings (got the brown & yellow ones) but, the buttons, zippers and vents still work flawlessly. Medium'ish sized pockets, can hold cell in one, wallet and blade in other, or 4-6 gels in one pocket, two bars in the other.
Best MTB shorts I have owned in the last 10 years, lots of cheap quality stuff out there today, these are the real deal and can take heavy usage. They have a nice adjustment system (waist tabs, small webbing and friction buckles in front waist on both sides) and a no slip strip around the inside waist (3 silicone tacky strips), if you tuck in a baggier sized jersey, so its not flappin' and gettin' caught on cactus, junipers, or the worst out here...mesquite!, have "butt burned" these over a dozen times on my rear tire hard, and the shorts do not have nylon burn, no tear, no frays. The front vents (across top of inner thigh) are awesome for ventilation when its hot out. They also dry quickly if used as board shorts, well done Yeti! Getting more as daily wear, for beater shorts if they ever go back on sale. I'm a 34-35 waist and got the XL size, perfect fit. These are not hipster, 'too tight' shorts...these are man shorts.
      Get You Some!

I agree 100%. One of the best MTB Shorts out there. I also like the Yeti Tellers and the Como Liners.

Thanks for the great review Michael! I ended up buying a pair based on your review and I love them!
