Why We Like The XTR SL-M9100 Trigger Shifters

As you'd expect from Shimano's top-tier mountain bike group, the XTR SL-M9100 Trigger Shifters are precise, quick, and offer an ergonomic design that's comfortable to keep a finger on for fast changes on steep climbs and rooty descents alike.

In years past we expected to see a lot of similarities between a shifter and its predecessor, but this year Shimano broke the mold with an all-new shifter that features a sleek, dark look, and faster, easier actuation. The new shifter reduces lever access time bu a claimed 20%, while simultaneously reducing the force required to operate by 35% compared to the M9000. The lighter force makes it easier to rapidly shift through your cassette during transitions from steep descents to punchy climbs, so you can land at the perfect gear, and avoid shifting under serious load.

The new shifter is available with Shimano's I-Spec EV which allows you to better customize your cockpit. I-Spec EV features 60-degrees of rotational adjustment, compared to the 15-degrees of I-Spec II, and 14-millimeters of side-to-side adjustment to achieve comfort and control on the bars. Clamp-mount shifters are also available for riders with smaller hands. Should you be opting for a two-by setup, Shimano offers a single-blade left lever that simplifies front shifting by allowing you to push with your thumb to shift up to your big ring, and push a second time to release back to the small ring.

The Shimano SL-M9100 Trigger Shifters are available in left or right hand units. The right lever is compatible with 12-speed Shimano R9100 groupsets; the left lever is, with Shimano's double R9100 cranksets. Left and right are sold separately, so be sure to order one of each if you're looking to run a double setup.

What do you think about this product?



I’ve seen references on other sites to an XTR 9100 shifter selectable to 11 or 12 speed with a little screw on the bottom of the shifter. Is this that? Or is this 12 speed only?

The 9100 shifter does have the converter on the bottom of the shifter to select either 11spd or 12spd operation. This essentially eliminates the 12th shift up to the 51t cog and allows the shifter to be used with the 10-45t cassette.

I've put it through the wringer

Shimano reliability and trust, no short cuts in this shifter. Hands down the best shifter I ever used and I've been riding since 1989. Would buy again especially at this price.

I returned this product before using it

Bought as a gift, but the shifter arrived lightly used. Maybe the UPS guy unboxed it and did some laps.

No Better But As Good as Eagle

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Everyone including me has moved to Sram Eagle as Shimano fell behind in the mountain drivetrain world but M9100 is a strong comeback. I wouldn't say it's better than Eagle but it's just as good. The shifter felt firm, maybe a bit firmer, more mechanical than Eagle but in a good way like the 11 speed group many of us remember. Shifting was accurate as Shimano is known for and the wide range is a great upgrade from the old 46t max cog. My favorite bit was this shift lever - I had forgotten how much I liked push-or-pull action of the lever that Shimano has but Sram doesn't. Overall I wouldn't recommend rushing out and replacing your Eagle drivetrain with Shimano but if it comes down to a drivetrain choice on your new bike you can't go wrong with M9100.
