The Thrice OC Lock-On Grips bring open-core vibration compliance to the trail
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"The open core cutout on the Thrice OC is doing real mechanical work — it's not a marketing feature. By removing that section of the inner core, SDG lets the 20A rubber deform against the palm the same way a slip-on would, which translates directly to less hand pump on longer, rougher stages. The tapered inner core keeps things from rotating even without a second clamp ring, and the single lockring design means more usable grip surface closer to the bar clamp. For trail and enduro riders who have always sacrificed comfort for lock-on security, this grip changes that equation."
Long technical descents and repeated chunk sequences put grip ergonomics under a different kind of scrutiny than short punchy trails do. The SDG Thrice OC Lock-On Grips were designed specifically for that sustained-output context — where hand pump accumulates over time and the difference between a grip that transmits vibration and one that absorbs it becomes measurable in how much a rider has left at the bottom of a stage.
The mechanism behind that compliance is the Open Core Zone, a deliberate cutout in the internal structure that allows the 20A-durometer rubber outer to flex independently against the palm. Conventional lock-ons keep the core intact, which holds shape but limits the rubber's ability to move. SDG's open section creates a localized compliance zone directly under the palm where vibration input is highest, reducing transmitted force without sacrificing structural integrity at the clamp interface. The tapered inner core handles anti-rotation duty without requiring a second lockring, which recovers grip surface area closer to the bar clamp — a meaningful ergonomic gain for riders running shorter bars or needing precise hand placement.
Shaping reinforces the mechanical story. The oval profile mirrors the natural cross-section of a gripped hand, reducing the muscular effort required to maintain closure. Ramped and undercut finger-shaped grabbers locate knuckle placement consistently across riding positions, and thin inboard ribs distribute thumb contact load to dampen high-frequency vibration at the inboard end of the grip. The flared outer end adds leverage for braking inputs and protects against bar-end strikes on technical terrain, while the 1/4 flange sits low enough to avoid interference with brake and shifter clamp positioning.
At 48g and 135mm, the Thrice OC fits comfortably into trail and enduro builds where weight is considered but comfort and control take priority over grams. For riders who have historically traded compliance for lock-on security, the Thrice OC makes that tradeoff unnecessary.
