Take a close look at some of the pro road machines out there these days: Wiggins' Pinarello Dogma, Van Lierde's Cervelo, Vos' Giant. What do they all have in common? Aside from being piloted by world-podium-topping athletes, these bikes are each equipped with oblong chainrings from Rotor. Why? The ovalized shape of rings like the Rotor Outer Aero Q-Rings lends more leverage to the pedal stroke, extracting more power from your legs and more efficiency at the same time from each rotation. The effect felt on the bike is a smoothing of the pedal stroke, less exertion to achieve the same speed and power output, and a reduction in that "dead spot" you feel during each stroke.
The particular chainrings you see here are outer road chainrings, and are only compatible with Rotor cranksets and powermeters. For best performance, Rotor recommends running Outer Q-Rings in tandem with Inner Q-Rings. For maximum benefit of the Q-Ring design, install the chainring so that the long axis of the ring aligns with the crankarm.
