For a long time, just wearing any type of helmet was seen as a good decision for your overall safety, but we're glad to see a trend of manufacturers now questioning the materials that go into making the helmets that protect us on our bikes. Considering the impact all of our old helmets have on our environment, Kali Protectives set out with the ambitious goal of making a helmet that would be kinder to the world around us, and the result is the Saha Helmet, made completely out of renewable, bio-based, recycled, and non-solvent based raw materials.
Though it boasts an ecologically-responsible construction, the Saha's main goal is still displacing energy from an impact. Kali makes sure it's more than adequately equipped to do this by heat-molding a corn-based polymer known as Polyactide into a hard outer shell, then complementing it with 100% recycled Polystyrene inner foam to mimic the effective construction of more conventional helmets, which usually feature a hard plastic shell backed by EPS foam.
The Saha is designed for commuters first and foremost. It complies with safety standards to keep you protected as you navigate crowded bike lanes and fast-moving traffic, but it does so without as much of a focus on eliminating material in the name of reducing weight that mountain or road-specific helmets often have. Despite its lack of interest in weight loss, the Saha still features venting along the top of the helmet, a dial system for a customized fit, and washable padding for a dose of plushness.
