Description

Find your way.

The Giro Men's Privateer R Shoe breaks on the scene as a refreshing update to the original Privateer, preserving all the qualities riders loved in the classic hardworking trail shoe and updating the outsole to co-molded nylon and rubber for an impeccable mix of comfort, stiffness, and grip. Minor updates aside, the Privateer R still cuts a streamlined profile to add a touch of class to any day on the trail.

The Privateer R's closure system consists of a ratcheting buckle at the top and two hook-and-loop straps across the midfoot and toes that are easily adjustable on the fly for a secure, comfortable fit. The upper is made of soft, breathable microfiber and features perforations for added cooling and a sleek, minimalist profile.

Giro incorporates a co-molded nylon and rubber outsole with grippy, high-traction lugs for confident foot placement on and off the bike. Toe box reinforcement increases the Privateer R's lifespan, with a rubber toe guard to protect your piggies when the going gets rough. The outsole's tread pattern also accommodates flat pedal riding while providing debris clearance for two-bolt clipless pedals, so they'll travel with you between disciplines.

  • Grippy trail shoe for singletrack adventures and racing
  • Co-molded nylon sole optimizes pedaling efficiency
  • High-traction rubber lugs provide aggressive grip
  • Microfiber upper is pleasantly supple and breathable
  • Dual-strap lower with micro-adjustable buckle at upper
  • Aegis antimicrobial promotes freshness after sweaty rides
  • Giro's sleek styling gets a rugged makeover for the trail

high arches beware

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 44.5

no doubt these shoes are dope. but they run a little on the tight side.
i was able to slide my foot into the snug fitting shoe with ease. but once i started strapping them up It felt too snug on the top of my feet. I should have gone with the HV version, If you have high arches. beware.

Meh. They Work

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have to admit, I was pretty stoked at first! The shoes were pretty comfy and the velcro and ladder are fine! But as they have gotten older with me, they are falling apart. I have only had these for maybe a couple months, and the bottom is already getting shredded. Combine that with the cleat screws not staying in after a ride(I have to tighten these before I put them on), and I would say pass on these. If you can get em on sale, then great, but definitely spend a bit more and get a quality shoe.

Great trail and XC shoes.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my second pair of Privateer Rs, as my first pair are absolutely disgusting after three seasons of hard trail riding (I call them stink bombs for reference). They fit true to size, ratchet down securely with the upper buckle, and grip over hike-a-bike sections like crazy with their gum-like rubber along the entire sole.

The only caveat has been a bit of premature wear after a recent riding trip down to Moab. I just noticed my sole is peeling a bit along the heel, but this has only happened to a single shoe and isn't the biggest deal. I'm assuming Moab's notoriously sharp sandstone cut the sole when I hopped down a rocky section on Captain Ahab that I wasn't going to drop.

Super Comfy Shoe!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Solid shoes, durable and comfy. great price too! Ordered a half size up and fits perfect! Gearhead Nick Gray is top notch guy, always helps me find the perfect gear for my riding

Classic

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've had several pairs of these that I use mostly mtb but also road, cyclocross. They are high quality and a solid shoe even for mtb.

Great quality shoe for the price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've rode nothing but Sidi's during my 25 year biking career... finally living in a place where Sidi's soles are slippery (North AZ) so I had to get a new pair of shoes. These work great on rock when I need to hike-a-bike. Highly recommend for the price.

Great Shoes, Great price

Absolutely loving these shoes so far. Very comfortable and not too bad for walking around in.

One of best shoes for the price!

    • Fit: True to size

These are a very comfortable shoe and very well made for the price. After doing a lot of measuring, reading, research I have decided as much as I like them they are not going to work for me. It is not the shoe in anyway...it is my foot. The shoes measures 103.7 wide on the outside for a size 47, my foot measures 105.0, so I better pass to avoid the

Very nice shoe for the price

    • Fit: True to size

I have a Bontrager MTB (387 grams with cleat) and a very nice Lake CX401 Kangaroo Carbon road shoe (369 grams with cleat). I would place the Giro as far as fit and comfort better than the Bontrager and very close to the Lake. Very good closure system...I have had Sidi and this Giro ratchet buckle works better I can not give a performance review as I am still deciding if I want the weight the Privateer R has (445gram w/o cleat). Two thumbs up to Competitive Cyclist letting me try different shoes and I am 200 miles from a bike shop.

Really comfortable pair of cycling shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

I have owned more than a few pair of cycling shoes over the years. I mainly purchase Sidi shoes for road and a pair of mountain shoes for cross. I generally buy my shoes to small, maybe because I want them to fit like skates or ski boots. Whatever the case may be I usually purchase them in a size 43, I purchased this pair in a 44 and they are super comfy! So in terms of size they probably run a little to the small side. They look great and fit great, I am using them for a Peloton bike I just purchased but will take them outside when the weather breaks. As I said, this is a terrific pair of shoes---they look great, fit great and have just the right amount of features without going over the top. They come with a really nice sock liner that puts Sidi to shame---Really Sidi, you are charging us way north of $200.00 for a pair of cycling shoes and thats the best you can do for sock liners?? I have seen more substantial sock liners in my daughters Keds!!! If you're
looking for a new pair of bike kicks add these to your list, you will not be disappointed. I purchased dark shadow/flame!

    Feels Right

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 45

Great fit! true to size. I took a leap of faith based on the other reviews that said the shoe runs small. In my case they did not. I ordered the 45 and it Feels Right. I have a pair of North Wave Road shoes that are the exact same size. I have not hit the trails as I just got the shoes tonight . I did tweak them in the driveway and all is good. Looking forward to really giving them a what fore. These shoes feel very comfortable walking around the house. Purchased the Dark Shadow Flame and they look great.

    Comfy and stiff

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 45

Happy with the shoe and even more than usual as i got on sale. Nice pair to use even if you will ride on regular pedals as the cleats don't protrude. Giro shoes just fit me so I stick to the brand.

    Wish they fit right

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 46 & 47

These shoes look fast and high performance but unfortunately they just don't fit right. I normally wear a 46 (11.5). Ordered a 46 and were too short and tight all around. Returned for 47's... the length was good but were too narrow around mid foot. As much as I wanted to keep them they just didn't fit right and were not comfortable at all. But they look cool.

    Good shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The soles of these shoes are great if you ever do a hike-a-bike because of the soft, grippy rubber lugs. The hard rubber around the toe and heel area to protect the shoe is great too. The ratchet and velcro straps also work well. The only reason I don't give these a 5 rating is because I have a wide foot and they're a little tight in the middle.

    Just tried them on . . .

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 44.5

When I got these I saw that they might be a little small. I was right, I got a 44.5 which is what I wear in Northwave and these are smaller. Also these are a narrow shoe, so if you have wider feet I would recommend looking for something else.

    Great Shoes

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 44

I didn't buy these on here but I was just looking at some gear and love these enough that I figured I'd take the time to type up the review. I forgot my shoes at home when I was on a trip so I was forced to buy a new pair and tried these on and they felt good so I pulled the trigger. I do not regret that, haven't touched my old shoes since. I was a 44 in shimano and got a 44 in these and they fit great. Never once had any issues in the last 2 months and I ride frequently.

    Killer Shoes

These things are great. Good stiffness for power transfer yet and not heavy. The dark shadow/ flame are a super rad color, the orange really adds some pop. They really work great with the Crank Brother Enduro Pedals, awesome for all mountain riding. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a do it all shoes.

      Low volume shoe

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 41.5

Rode with the Carbide for the past two years and got this shoe in the same size figuring that they would be a similar fit. Did not go with the HV because I don't typically have a high volume or wide foot but I probably should have as I can't seem to get good closure with the middle velcro strap.

      bulletproof and comfortable

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 45.5

bought these for daily use commuting and 20+mi rides on cross bike
have held up great even with 4 season use and a lot of washing & exposure to salt & grime
nylon sole makes for comfortable running & walking + good traction

Great mtb shoes, but run small.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 44

These shoes are a great value and definitely do the job. However, make sure that you order up a full size as they run very small. I'm a men's size 9.5 normally and had to get a size 44.
