Why We Like The Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bike Computer

We use the Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bike Computer to make the most of our time on two wheels—it's the only solar-charged option from Garmin, positioned right at the top of the line. Even during the most demanding usage, like GPS tracking and connectivity with other devices, the solar charging allows this computer to run for up to 45 hours straight. With more conservative usage, this model can run over 150 hours. Our favorite features include the multi-band that lets us explore far outside of cell service and the three included mounts that let us move the device from our mountain bike to our road bike with ease. The Edge 1040 also uses stamina insights and training suggestions to help dial us in for bigger efforts and race days.

Worth the cost

I have done a couple rides and it definitely helps having a larger screen (versus the 530), especially when using the map. The training features and prompts took a minute to get used to, but are very intuitive. The only con is that when I was out on a long ride using the map, it crashed. Luckily I was able to restart it and continue on my way.

Great GPS so far!

I brought this as a combo heart rate monitor/GPS/Stat machine. So far I am loving this. From the videos I have seen there is so much more for me to learn. Looking forward to squeezing the MOST out of this.

Unsure?

Not user friendly. I don't see my screen charging via solar?

Migrated from Shimano E-Tube Ride on iPhone

It took a while to find the apps or whatever you call them to get the Edge 1040 Solar to have all the data and graphics of the iPhone running E-Tube that i've used for 3 years. I wanted to have the phone accessible for pics, texts, calls, etc. so bought the 1040... Wow initially very underwelmed by the Edge 1040 Solar. But after searching and installing various add-ons, i I now have the map and 6 windows of data. If I'd known it took 3rd party apps, and the map is still only about 50% as good as what's on e-tube iPhone app, i probably would have saved my money. But like i said, i wanted to have the iPhone separate, so it is what it is.

Sensors won't connect until device is rebooted

I like this device. It has many great features, but it also has one really annoying issue. Many times after waking my bike up, the Rally pedals will want to be calibrated. After running calibration, all the sensors disconnected from the Edge and won't reconnect until I fully power down and restart the Edge 1040 Solar. I can't seem to find any solution.

Incredible battery life

Have used this for around a month and have only charged it once. The connection to my rear light radar is much better thus drastically improving the battery life of my light as well.
