Castelli 10m Lung Warmer Top - Men's $49.95
When you step out into the garage to pack the car on the morning of your 'cross race, you realize you can see your breath preceding you in white clouds. The grass is a little frosty in the yard, which means it's going to be even chillier under tree cover when you get to the race. Step away from the newspaper you're thinking about bringing with you for a little extra insulation and reach for Castelli's 10m Lung Warmer Top instead to avoid starting your race off with a burning, tight chest.
Made with Gore's Windstopper 3-layer fabric, the Lung Warmer is thin enough to fit between your base layer and your race suit. Designed with a high neck, it'll act as a barrier against harsh wind to help your air passages stay warm so it's easier to breathe in temperatures below 41 degrees Fahrenheit.
Castelli constructed the Lung Warmer to extend only to the upper part of your torso where you catch wind, and the streamlined size allows you to fold it up and stick it in a pocket mid-ride. Wear it while you're taking warm-up laps or even through the start of your race or ride and take it off in seconds with the tear-away style closure at the top.
Claimed weights are provided by the vendor.

Great for smaller folks
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I purchased this for my spouse who is 5' 3" and 108 pounds. She used it on a 45 mile, cloudy road ride that was from the upper 40s to lower 50s. She said it worked perfectly and was easy to remove mid-ride and store in her jersey pocket. It is the size of a GU package stored. I purchased one for myself, based on her favorable opinion. I'm 5'10", 150 pounds, wear Castelli medium or small and I could see how the fit potentially could be a little longer or wider for larger folks, but I haven't used it yet. It will definitely be my newspaper replacement. As others have mentioned, if you're a bigger person wearing sizes above medium in castelli, it might be on the smaller size.
Excellent idea but needs larger sizing
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: Runs small
This is an outstanding idea and it works really - REALLY - well. The problem is the sizing. I'm not built like a TdF rider (little guy), I'm a pretty typical American male - 5'11". The piece that goes around the neck is too tight and needs a wider range of adjustment. The piece that covers your chest needs to go down to your navel and go wider than the center of your chest. Castelli needs to make this in two sizes.
Other than that, this is featherlight weight and it's a breathable wind block. I'd estimate that it adds 10F warmth to your torso without blocking moisture transfer. Great idea but make it bigger.
If you're a little guy or a woman, this probably fits well.
