Bora WTO 45 Disc Brake Wheelset

When the season’s race profiles vary, and our training takes us to a myriad of places in search of perfect tarmac, we need a versatile wheel stiff enough to handle the power when we lay down the hammer. Campagnolo’s Bora WTO series combines carbon fiber rims and USB ceramic hubs for an all-around impressive wheelset to save time and energy as we race for the win. Campagnolo’s Wind Tunnel Optimized (WTO) project sought to redesign not only the rim but also the hub and spokes, to create a truly aerodynamic wheel for real world conditions.

The Bora WTO 45 is the mid-depth option of the series, perfect as an all-arounder race wheelset, and at only 1520g in this disc brake version, the aero profile won’t cause a weight penalty. Campagnolo’s carbon layup design creates their two-way fit, allowing you to run either clincher or tubeless tires on the same rim. The spoke nipples are put into place using a magnet through the rim, which eliminates the need for a drilled hole through the carbon. This creates a uniform rim surface, with fewer weak points, which means a stronger rim that can better handle the power you’re throwing down as you attack on the final straight. The smooth surface also eliminates the need for rim tape when set up with clincher tires, saving time and weight. At 19mm internal width, the Bora rims match well with road tires between 23mm and 28mm for an aerodynamic tire profile to further your advantage in the wind.

We would be remiss to not draw attention to the hub of the Bora series. Redesigned for aerodynamic advantage, the aluminum externals of the hub allow wind to better flow through the hub, rather than creating drag. The internals of the hub that really excite us: USB ceramic bearings. Ceramic bearings are 50% smoother than standard bearings, which allows them to move past one another more efficiently, saving you energy with each pedal stroke. In addition to efficiency, ceramic bearings are also lighter in weight for less heft to haul through the race course. In the rear, the plasma-treated freehub makes for a lighter-weight, more resilient aluminum that maintains strength and durability.

The Bora WTO wheels use Campagnolo’s G3 lacing pattern front and rear to optimize the lateral rigidity of the wheelset. G3 lacing places twice the number of spokes on the drive side than the non-drive side of the rear wheel, which helps the power transmission from rider to hub by reducing any twisting that would occur due to pedal stroke. On the front wheel, the left side sees more spokes to ensure disc brake forces are handled appropriately. Between the ultrasmooth ceramic bearings, rim stiffness, and hub lacing, the Bora WTO wheels ensure every watt you put out transfers to speed on the road.

Best wheels I have ever ridden

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Height:
5' 10"
Weight:

The title says it all. I have been riding since the 1970s and was a cat 2 for quite a while on my Masi Gran Criterium. I have got these on my new De Rosa Idol now, great combination, all Campagnolo Chorus. Best bike I have ever had.
