Why We Like the Trail Liner Shorts
Assos' Trail collection blends the boundaries between comfort and support. Specifically for its mountain bike short counterpart, the Trail Liner Shorts is what we're looking for when we need increased breathability and cushioning on trail. With its OFFROAD insert and 10-millimeters of memory foam, the Trail Liner Shorts are set to take us up trail and back down again. This first layer offers impact protection and all the support we'll need while we're riding.
- Assos liner short for its mountain bike baggies
- Use its OFFROAD insert with 10mm of memory foam and elastic insert
- Targeted thickness at the rear for optimal comfort and support
- 3D waffle perforated foam increases breathability
- Aerofit warp-knit with an open structure for maximum ventilation
- Removable impactPad has a perforated surface for breathability

Just enough hip padding to help, and I can't notice they are there when riding. Snug fit and slightly short compared to my padded liners from G-Form. A little extra length would be 5 stars. I'm 6ft 165 and ordered Large. Have worn many times. In temps ~ 50F now I double up w/ a pair of Rapha bibs and Patagonia overshorts for warmth+ protection.

Comfortable, but not for crashing in

These are great shorts and very comfortable. But just stay on the bike. One minor crash when I lost the front on a loose flat turn, and they tore a hole where the hip pad pocket goes. Hip pad didn't really do anything either, still ended up with hip rash. I ordinarily wouldn't ding them as all bets are off when you crash, however, I usually wear my Assos road bibs underneath when riding and have done the same in those and they came through unscathed. In my opinion specific MTB gear should be better able to deal with the occasional contact with the ground.

Great fit and very well made. However, the chamois really soaks up the butt sweat so make sure you lube up before your ride.

The bar was high for me when getting these liners. Assos has set the bar on the road chamois for years, what do they know about MTB? Apparently a lot. The liner carries the same top-tier chamois you would expect with added details that matter, like hip-pad pockets. The liner is not too long, which I love and sits nicely. The chamois is hard to rival on 5+ hour days in the bike but still doesn't fell like a diaper when having your after ride beer. Frankly, others will have to step up their game in the MTB liner category with this on the market.

I must admit, I am always a little skeptical when predominantly road-oriented brands enter the MTB space (or vice versa). It is clear with these liners that Assos has done its homework, and brought much of their top-of-the-line technology and attention to detail to the MTB space. How refreshing! I've now logged 200-250 MTB miles in these in various conditions - hot, humid, rainy, cold, snowy, muddy, etc. When you take these out of the box, the construction will impress. Wearing the liners only takes that up a notch. The laser cut waist and legs help me forget I'm wearing them. The liner includes two small pliable hip pads that slip in easily -- they are perfect to help take the edge of that unexpected fall when you send it. The chamois is ideal for longer rides -- I'm secretly hoping they introduce a minimalist version as well for quick shuttle laps! Unlike my experience with Assos road wear where I always must size up, I've found these to run true to size. Well done, Assos!

All I can say is wow. I had ridden Assos road gear in the past, was always happy with the fit and function so when time to purchase new MTB gear, I figured I would give this a try. I purchased the Rally short, trail liner and trail short sleeve jersey. First impressions brought in by the packaging alone led me to believe I was in for a treat...really nice touch. Upon opening the packages, the feel and quality of the finish delivered. As good as it looked and felt, I immediately thought; "how good can it be?", then i put it on. The fit and overall comfort is incredible and on the first ride I literally forgot i was wearing anything. Luckily for other trail users, the clothes were really there. The waist bands are probably the nicest fitting and comfortable I've experienced, the jersey is both loose and snug in all the right places. I was left completely impressed and will definitely purchase more. Only thing to consider is sizing when buying this. I'm typically a U.S> medium in most everything, but I sized up to large and was good to go.
