What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"I run both the BKD-1 and BKM-1 in my shop and the Hydraulic Brake Bleed Kit Upgrade Set resolved every compatibility gap I had been working around since the newer SRAM and Shimano models started coming through the door. The thin-walled compression sleeve for internal bleed nipples is the piece I had been most frustrated without, and the fit and finish on all six parts is exactly what I expect from Park Tool. Worth noting that I immediately labeled each part by fluid type on arrival, keeping DOT and mineral oil tools separated is non-negotiable in a busy shop environment."
A brake bleed kit is only as useful as its most recent service capability, and brake technology has not been standing still. Park Tool developed the Hydraulic Brake Bleed Kit Upgrade Set to bring the BKD-1 and BKM-1 into full compatibility with the current generation of hydraulic brake systems from the manufacturers whose hardware shows up most frequently on the workbench. Rather than replacing a kit that is otherwise performing well, this six-piece set targets the specific gaps that newer brake models have created and fills them precisely.
The included parts cover three distinct brake system families. The M4 x 0.8 adaptors address SRAM DB8, Trick Stuff, and Campagnolo mineral oil systems, which have become increasingly common across both road and gravel builds. The thin-walled hose compression sleeve and hose assembly with integrated fitting are engineered specifically for the internal bleed nipple design found on current Shimano mineral oil brake systems, a configuration that standard fittings cannot service cleanly. The 11mm bleed blocks round out the set with Hayes DOT system compatibility, extending the kit's reach into the enduro and downhill segment where Hayes hardware remains prevalent.
Fluid discipline is mandatory when working with these parts. Every component in the set is sealed for either DOT fluid or mineral oil, and those designations are not interchangeable. Cross-contaminating brake fluid through improperly matched tools is a documented path to seal degradation and brake failure, and Park Tool's recommendation to use each part exclusively with its intended fluid type is a functional safety requirement, not a suggestion. For shops and home mechanics running mixed fleets of DOT and mineral oil systems, organizing and labeling tools by fluid type before any service begins is the standard practice this kit is built around. All six parts are also available individually, which makes targeted replacement straightforward when a single component needs refreshing without pulling the full upgrade set.
