Why We Like The Caledonia 5 Force eTap AXS Road Bike
With inspiration from established road racing lines, Cervelo has pushed the envelope on endurance road bikes in its creation of the Caledonia 5. The product of a combination of the more laid-back comfort of the Aspero and the Roubaix-born R5, the Caledonia 5 hits that middle ground so many riders have been searching for. Cervelo’s pairing with SRAM’s 12-speed Force eTap AXS groupset means there will be no external cables to manage, and effortless shifting to benefit from, so you’ll see smooth riding from start to finish.
Cervelo increased the trail and rear-center figures to increase stability for the rider who wants all-day comfort and precision handling. The Caledonia 5 is made to take on all terrain and all weather conditions, and the bike’s versatility means that it can transition easily from a speedy racing machine to a comfortable gravel rider. Fenders can be fitted in case of those few muddy surprises on rainy rides.
Given its speed and performance, it’s clear that the Caledonia 5 has not left behind its racing heritage. Its more robust, aerodynamic tube shapes promote efficient power transfer while you’re slicing through gnarly headwinds so no watts are left behind, and increased stability means you’ll see outstanding control on your ride. Designed with the help of Team Sunweb, the Caledonia 5 will now serve as the team’s Roubaix single day race bike, which are notoriously harder on bikes than stage races. Cervelo increased stability while maintaining speed and responsive handling so everything is dialed in for racing with zero margin for error.
The Caledonia 5’s featured Force eTap AXS groupset offers the best of both worlds in that it is both electronic and wireless, which means there are no cables to hassle with while shifting, effortlessly, on demand. There is a wide range of available ratios without any large, jarring jumps between gears due to the use of smaller than standard 48/25t chainrings and a 10-36t cassette. In order to control chain slap, the rear derailleur features a hydraulic damper and the chainset also includes a power meter for more impressive training.
You won’t have to worry about cutting across cobbles, singletrack connectors and gravely backroads on your ride thanks to the versatility the Caledonia 5 is known for. Hidden mudguard mounts and additional tire clearance, allowing up to 34mm rubber, means riders will see increased durability and more potential for multi-season use. Both the carbon Reserve 35mm wheels and the 30mm Vittoria Rubino Pro tires can be set up tubeless for comfort and performance.
