Description

Service Course SL 70 XPLR Handlebar

Zipp challenges us to go farther with the Service Course SL 70 XPLR Handlebar. Its ergonomic shaping of a shallower drop combined with outsweep on the drops provides a stable platform for our most demanding and meandering rides, all in a lightweight package.

We’ve seen a lot of flared drop bars come on to the gravel seen lately, and while that outward bend above the brake clamp can be helpful, it often places the hoods uncomfortably inward and angled toward the stem. The SL 70 XPLR’s sweet spot of a 5-degree flare with the 11-degree outsweep keeps the hoods more in-line with your wrist angle for greater comfort when riding on the hoods for hours on end. Where traditional drop bars force our arms inward to get more aerodynamic in the drops, the XPLR’s 11-degree outsweep puts our wrists at a more natural angle. Like a solid stance for a push-up, the wider drop gives us more stability and confidence when descending or on rough terrain.

Made from lightweight and tough 7050 aluminum, the SL model is 45g lighter than the non-SL in a 42cm. With 100mm of clamping area, there’s room for light, bags and computer mounts aplenty to make sure you can find your way back to the car with snacks to spare.

  • A shallow-drop, slightly-flared bar for adventure rides and gravel
  • 7050 aluminum keeps weight low and handlebar durable
  • 11-degree outsweep provides comfortable position for long rides
  • Flattened top section enhances ergonomics for climbing
  • 100mm clamping area has ample room for bags and gadgets

Goldilocks

I've put about 600 miles on this bar. They got this one right. Every piece of the geometry, including flare, is perfect for me. From country dirt roads to grinding hill climbs to screaming double-track downhills to pavement, there is a comfortable and confidence-inspiring hand position on this bar.

adding a star to the review. after trying ritchey butano (12 deg flare bar), im coming back to these for a cyclocross race bar. the 12s were just too wide. These are a nice combination of attributes, and they just have a very nice feel. less flex than the Ritchey's but somehow at least as comfortable. the more i ride them, the more impressed i am. the holes aren't big enough to feed two Di2 wire through for the bar-end junction. typical SRAM using customers as beta testers. BUT the shape is very unique and you may end up really liking it. i think it needs a bit more conventional flare and a bit LESS outsweep, but that's just me. it has a nice shape to it on the top and is the one of the lighter alloy bars out there.

Perfect everything

In a market saturated with gravel this and gravel that, these bars shine above others. The flare is just right and comfortable. So many "competitors" make bars with crazy flare that are wide and heavy. Light, strong, comfortable but also racy; these are the best you can get for the money.
