Why We Like The Speedplay Zero Pedals
We’re excited that Wahoo is bringing back the Speedplay Pedals, and at the top of our list is the new edition of the Speedplay Zero. They're are already known as one of the winningest pedals on the planet, and with the new updates, we reckon they’ll be one of the longest-lasting too. We’ll throw the new Zero on our race bikes, hoping to channel a bit of that Alp de’ Huez power on the next gradient uptick.

Same Great Speedplay Pedal, No Grease
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- standard
I've been on Speedplay's for 20+ years and they have been virtually bulletproof ... if you keep them greased. Yeah, the cleats are good for maybe 5,000 miles, if you keep them clean and dry lubed but for me this pedal design is the best. No compatibility issues with legacy Speedily pedals and the new Wahoo cleats and vice versa. The Wahoo cleats and pedals work the same as legacy speedplay, which means brilliant. I like that I don't have to grease them IF the service life is comparable, time will tell on that.

Long-term Speedplay user
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I have used Speedplay pedals for over twenty years. I like the ability to engage the pedal with my foot being flat and having a slight amount of play in the pedals. The cleat on these pedals is way too complicated. When I could engage the pedal, it was difficult to disengage. You need confidence in your pedals and these are crap. If you are a long-term Speedplay user, reconsider before buying these.

Great Pedals, still has minor issue.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- regular spindle
This is my second pair of Speedplay Zero pedals. After a short amount of time riding they develop some lateral play in the spindle. Just enough to feel a minor clicking feeling in the pedals. I've had one pair replaced, and it happened again. This brand new pair ... 2 years later... is doing the same thing.

Stubborn cleats
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- Standard
I find the standard Wahoo Speedplay cleats really stubborn. They are very difficult to clip in and very difficult to clip out. I would say they are dangerously stubborn when clipping out in an emergency. I’ve used Speedplay clips for 21 years. The Wahoo takeover has hurt quality!

I love Speedplay Zeros. If you do too, you'll be right at home here. While I miss the splash of color I don't miss greasing old style Zeros. (Which I still have to do on old pedals on old bikes.) I currently have 4 road bikes, all with Speedplays. "New" cleats have no problems with older pedals.

I have used speed play pedals for 15 years and finally replaced my last pedals with these new wahoo. They work beautifully

Wahoo - Speedplay Zero Pedals
I bough these to replace my old (10 years old) Speedplay Zeros and I am very satisfied with them. Like the new look with stainless all the way around.

Multiple warranty issues
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Here we are in April 2023 and I've had the "luck" to have to replace 4 sets of Zeroes with wahoo on warranty because of the lateral play (on 2 bikes). The replacement set they just sent me - SAME issue! My knees don't react well to the lateral play- even a little bit... They're really helpful in customer support, but this is too much. For those who have had no issues, I'm jealous. My old Zeroes needed some care now and then but they were amazing compared to this!

X Cleat
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I am looking for new pedals since Speedplay is no longer supporting the X pedal. I will not purchase any further products from Speedplay. Mostly since they stated they were going to develop a replacement cleat for the X pedal, but that was not true. I just spoke to them and they said they cannot help me find new cleats. For years, cyclist have complained about Shimano "owning" the industry, but as it turns out they are the only ones you can trust. Although my pedals are fine, they are worthless because I cannot find replacement cleats. I would not trust Wahoo (ridiculous name) or speedplay. Take your money elsewhere before they change their pedals again and stop support your cleats. Buyer BEWARE!

Even better than before
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer

Upon returning to cycling after a 5 year hiatus, my new bike came with a set of Shimano 105 SPD’s. I bolted up the cleats and put about 800 miles on them before deciding to go back to the Speedplay system I had used since the mid 90’s. From the adjustable float to the dual sided entry they out shine the competition in every way. I never experienced any problems with the original speedplay design but the improvements Wahoo made to the pedal and cleat are fantastic.

Q1: what is the weight difference between the Wahoo Speedplay Nano and Zero models? Q2: Will the old Speedplay cleats work with the new pedals or is the cleat design changed? Q3: With the new sealed bearing design, do the pedals need to be serviced with new grease every year? If so, is this easily done by the user as done with the older Speedplay pedals?
