Makes installation a snap
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
We had already had a four bike hitch mounted rack, but installing it and putting bikes on it in the hot summer sun was always an ordeal to be dreaded. Easily a half hour. It was even more complicated with women's frame configurations getting the bikes to fit together. With our two daughters no longer interested in riding, it was time to move to a two-bike system that would be easier to mount and load.
This carrier did not disappoint. It stores in a compact unit with a short strap to keep the "stinger" part tight up against the body. To install, you just undo the strap, pull the stinger down until it latches, then lift the unit and slide the stinger into the hitch receiver. There is a prong with spring tension that goes into a hole on the side of the hitch to keep the stinger from coming out. The prong is tightened with a knob that can be locked with the included keys. Tightening the knob also makes the stinger expand inside the receiver to grip it securely.
Once you have it in the hitch, you pull both sides down until they click in place, then put the first bike in the molded tray and rotate the short arm to hold either the seat stay or the top tube, depending on your frame. Tighten the knob and lock it. The front and back wheels are secured with strong plastic straps that go through the spokes and then are pulled down through a buckle with a quick release ratchet. One tug makes it nice and snug. No fussing. Do the same with the second bike in the opposite direction and you are ready to go. Total time is about five minutes to mount the rack and load the bikes.
I did have an issue with one of the knobs getting stuck, but was able to fix it by removing it and greasing the threads. Now it is smooth a silk. This rack makes the decision to hit the trails so much easier. When you look out the back window while driving, you can tell this rack is secure because the bikes just don't move at all.
Putting it away is also very simple, doing everything in reverse.
The whole unit weighs less than what we had before, although I wouldn't say it is lightweight. It is just 100 times easier to use.
I have 2 Sondors ebikes with 4 1/2 inch tires. Will they fit in the Thule Easyfold carrier?
