Why We Like The Grail MK3 Wheel
Let's face it, disc brakes are pretty much non-negotiable on 'cross and gravel bikes, and we're betting in half a decade, the same will be true on the road. Likewise, tubeless technology is in the same boat and riders looking for a brand that does both well, trust Stan's NoTubes for wheel duties, as its tubeless expertise and track record of offering reliable, durable, lightweight, and frankly, competitively priced wheelsets make it an easy choice. If you're seeking a go anywhere adventure wheelset for a new build or a worthy upgrade, the Grail MK3 Wheel is primed for those long, solo, exploratory rides or mass start racing on any terrain.
Stan's achieves its reliable tubeless setup on all of its wheels thanks to its patented Bead Socket Technology (BST). On the Grail, its 20.3mm internal width is optimized for tires ranging from 25 to 40mm wide. The Grail's BST-R shape is further refined for these narrower tires and higher pressures allowing for a wider PSI range than the standard BST rims. As with standard BST, BST-R features low profile sidewalls allowing for a better seat of the tire bead and doesn't constrain it, which gives up precious tire width. It results in a super secure tubeless seal while allowing the tire to plump up with a greater volume of air than with standard rims. The tire is able to reach a fuller shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform, a plus in every riding scenario.
This allowed us to confidently run up to 30% lower air pressure than on a standard clincher wheel offering more traction, better handling, solid cornering, and better overall control. If you must, the rims are also compatible with standard tubes, and the lower sidewall still helps reduce pinch flat risks by reducing the amount of material present for the tube to pinch against. This means less time with flats and more time turning the wheels, regardless of the terrain.
Rims get laced to its Neo hub set, whose smooth-spinning, oversized stainless bearings rotate on a stiff, strong, and swaged axle. The Neo places the bearings at a wider stance for a claimed threefold increase in strength compared to other hub designs. Neo's freehub engages all 6 pawls for solid engagement and at a very quick ten-degrees. If your swapping parts over to a new frame or fork down the road, Stan's laser-etched SealLock end caps allow for super easy installation and quick conversions.
The Stan's Grail MK3 Wheel comes complete with Stan's yellow rim tape and valves installed for quick and easy tubeless use right out of the box. The wheels are available in 6-bolt or Centerlock options as well as SRAM/Shimano and SRAM XD freehub options. Please note that the Grail MK3 has a maximum recommended rider weight of 230lbs and a maximum recommended tubeless tire pressure of 110 PSI with 25mm tires and 55 PSI with 40mm.
