New year, new tech, same low weight.

For 2015, Reynolds' Attack SLG Carbon Wheelset receives one major update to its otherwise unchanged recipe for low weight climbing. Like the deeper Assault and Strike rims, the Attack is tubeless-ready for 2015. This doesn't impact the wheelset's low weight and peerless climbing, it just gives you another option in what you use between the rims and the road.

Other than the new tubeless ready shelf-and-lip design, the Attack returns in 2015 as the same quality wheel that comes in at nearly half the price of competitor's similar carbon models — all while still knocking 400 grams off of the weight of 30 millimeter aluminum clinchers. Its low weight means less rotational mass fighting you on each pedal stroke during climbs or accelerating out of turns, so they go up and spin up fast. They also have a wide rim, which Reynolds calls "modern" but we call less rolling resistance, better cornering, and a more comfortable ride.

The CTg brake track is also a bright spot as it addresses one of the ongoing drawbacks of carbon rims. CTg is a laminate Reynolds developed that can withstand around 100 more degrees Fahrenheit than typical carbon braking surfaces, all but eliminating the risk of the rim deforming or failing under long, hard brake use. The Attacks also included Reynolds' proprietary Cryo-Blue Power brake pads, which work with the CTg laminate to produce more consistent (read: safer) braking. Safety is also improved through Reynolds' PR3 construction method, which uses different carbon fiber, epoxy, and resin for each of five rim regions.

Buyer Beware!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been running Reynolds carbon rims for the past 4 years. I have two sets of Reynolds 29er disc wheels for my mtn bikes and a set of these Attack wheels for road. I've had very few issues with the 29er Reynolds carbon rims with disc brakes and I would give these rims a thumbs up to anyone interested. As far as the Attack wheels with rim brakes, that's another story. Basically, I've had these wheels for 2 1/2 years. I don't put in tons of miles on my road bike so even though they are that old, they really haven't seen that much use. Anyway, what nobody has mentioned so far, is that if you live some where with prolonged descents you may end up melting the epoxy in the rims and deforming/destroying your rims. This is what happened to me. My rear wheel failed first, leaving me with a wobbly rear wheel and only my front brake to get home. A few miles of downhill on only the front brake, and what do you know... the front rim overheated and deformed as well. And for those wondering, I was using the correct Reynolds brake pads meant for carbon sidewalls. Reynolds suggested I do more hard on / off instead of brake dragging. Despite trying to "brake properly", sometimes the terrain dictates braking (ie 16% grades, long descents, etc.). Something to keep in mind if you're looking to purchase these guys. All that said, Reynolds has a pretty good warranty department and they are usually willing to work with folks to come to a resolution that both parties can walk away from and not feel screwed over.

Superbly priced wheelset!

I've been using these wheels for the past two months, and while the weather hasn't been ideal, I've been able to get some initial first impressions.
First- They are extremely light as compared to my Mavic wheels I'd been running, and you'll definitely appreciate that on the start/stops and anytime the road points up.
Second- They softened the ride up a little bit again compared to my Mavic Ksyrium Pro wheels.
If you don't plan on spending $3k on some wheels, these truly offer a best in-class performance/price that can't be beat.
I'd recommend them to anyone looking to save some weight, and have a smoother ride.

Don't Bust the Bank

In a nutshell this is a Lightweight climbing wheel that will leave money in your pocket to buy tires and tubes to put on them. I have a few hundred miles on these and couldn’t be happier with their climbing ability, durability, and braking power. Some specs: Weighting in at 1365 grams | 29mm rim depth and 25mm rim width. Wheels come with tubeless valves, pads, and a 10 speed spacer. Wish they had wheel bags – but for this price I understand. Just a heads up, getting the tires on initially is not easy and takes some finesse.

I have had the pleasure to tour the Reynold’s factory and the technology they put into these wheels is truly remarkable. The Cryogenic Glass Transition…is Reynold’s integrated system which couples their carbon fiber to their proprietary polymer brake pad. Reynolds states these work together, which produces a cooler braking system. I didn’t take the temperature of the brake track, but the braking is notably better than carbon wheels a few years ago. The pads are not $80 to replace either, which is nice to see, and unlike other competitors. Msrp, $30.00

Don't Bust the Bank

Is this wheelset compatible with the SRAM Force groupset?

Yes, but don't buy them, build quality horrible. Mine came apart in 50 miles and scratched my frame up. Reynolds said they would blue print them but tough shit about the frame. Trued now but braking performance is really bad. Sell you mine for cheap.

Stupid silly light

Guys, i'm a decent bike racer. I mean I'm a midwestern cat1, but here in Utah we have these mountains and the mountains don't do so well with heavier guys. These wheels make them hurt less. They're silly light and won't break the bank. Very reliable and stiff even for me who isn't light by cycling standards. They still retain some aero principles and the brake track is rock solid.
