Description

Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack

Tube damage from over-zealous clamping, flying road debris, quick-release skewers molesting frames—the dangers of auto-borne bikes are rightly feared. Kuat's Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack addresses many of our rack-related reservations by securing the bikes in sleds without wrenching down on the top tube and leaving an expanded 14in between each machine. The sleds are reinforced to support bikes weighing up to 40lb, and the foot-actuated pivot lever lets you unfold the rack when your upstairs appendages are occupied with bikes or laden with trip supplies.

  • A two-bike hitch rack that carries up to 80lb
  • Includes semi-integrated lock for security
  • Foot lever allows you to fold rack down hands-free
  • No-tool assembly saves time and stress

Look elsewhere for a premium rack

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I received the rack quickly from Backcountry and it was well packaged by Kuat. After unboxing I realized the security cable is grossly under-engineered for the job. The lock is too short with a poor locking mechanism and not at all what you would expect from a $500 rack designed to hold bikes costing thousands of dollars. While the rack is rated to a 47" wheelbase, anything over 45" requires a cheap velcro strap which is not installed and with no explanation on how to integrate with the rack other than wrapping it around the tray. Come on... Kuat - it's close but you cheesed out on the final details. Yes it is useable, but I won't be recommending it to friends.

I finally ditched my old Hollywood Racks platform hitch rack and decided to upgrade to the Kuat Sherpa 2.0, which had excellent reviews and is expected to have much less wiggle than the Hollywood, which is my biggest issue with it. The shipping from Backcountry was great - arrived in less than a week after ordering. The container is extremely well thought out and the shipping container actually doubles as a platform for the installation, which is brilliant. Including every tool you need, and they are quality tools, is icing on the cake. They did not have to do that, but the fact they did makes life so much easier. There was a bit of a tricky part during the install, and thanks to someone who reviewed the rack on another site, it saved me from almost giving up. I had the exact same scenario as this person: One thing to watch out for! The instructions tell you in Step 5 to install and tighten the long bolts that hold the platforms to the main crossbar, then insert a perpendicular bolt below in the "rear tray holder". In my case, inserting this third bolt was impossible once the long bolts were tight. I had to loosen everything up, back off the rear tray holder, and then I could just barely install the third bolt through the rail holder. You have to really play with the long bolts, prior to installing them completely, while trying to get that smaller bolt through all the holes to be able to insert it all the way - only then can you finish installing the long bolts. It was not easy and there was a lot of pushing down hard on the first bracket where the smaller bolt needs to get through in order for it to fit - and fit barely. Other than that, the install was a breeze. I will also agree with someone else who reviewed that you really need to get the arm locked down in a secure spot on the front fork for a tight fit. That's important. The fold up and tilt back capabilities are really nice also. Super easy to move the rack while it's installed. I had to take off the Hollywood rack after every ride, and that was not fun. There's nothing worse than looking in the rearview mirror and seeing the bike swaying back and forth while driving 70+ mph down the freeway. I am hoping this Kuat rack holds much tighter and with little to no sway. I will report back after a couple rides, but I am extremely happy so far.

First, big thanks to Backcountry for having this in stock (late September 2020). I couldn't find this anywhere else, and not only did Backcountry have it in stock, but I got 15% off as a first-time buyer, with free shipping. Love you, Backcountry! Now the rack. Packaged very thoughtfully, excellent instructions, and robust, "real" tools included to put it together (not a tiny Allen wrench like you'd get to assemble a table from Ikea). So thoughtful are the packaging and instructions, the primary part stays in the box, and you assemble secondary parts on it, with the box acting as a mini-workbench. Easy & quick to assemble, and it's of very good quality. Bike mounts easily, and is held steady (though you have to be quite certain to tightly fit that yolk around the top of the front fork). I think I'm really going to like this, and am excited to give it a try this weekend traveling to bike trails in Milwaukee County.

looks enticing but I need more info plez

I am confused---- does the platform rack " move" to allow access to my hatchback? I plan to drive across country a couple times a year......will this rack withstand the irregularities and " bumps" in the roadway without breaking?

Yes, this is great with our SUV. Rack pivots easily to allow access to hatchback and is very sturdy with no "rattles"

Will the 1.25" ever become available again? I have a 2016 Impreza hatchback and Uhaul only installs 1.25" hitches.

Awesome Bike Rack

This has hands down been the best bike rack I've owned. It was light enough to assemble and also easy enough to put on my truck hitch. The structure is super solid and when I put my bike on the rack for long road trips I don't have to worry about it - which is huge. I would recommend this rack to anyone if they want something that is easy and effective.

Great bike rack.Needed something solid for hauling the bikes 2000 miles one way in the summer. Safe and secure. Alan A.

Solid

Bought the 1.25" for the commuter car. Generally have two mountain bikes on it (trail bikes, not XC, not DH), and it is very solid and well made. They don't move very much, and the mounting seems very solid. Have used for several months without any problems. Happy with this so far.

Really solid 2 bike rack

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

After 3 or 4 years my Yakima rack was beginning to constantly have loose bolts and one of the arms had lost any spring resistance. As I was in the market for a new rack I decided to give the Kuat a try after several friends raved about them. Initial thoughts are it is very solidly built and I absolutely love how light weight it is compared to the Yakima. My understanding is they get the weight down by using a lot of aluminum vs. steel. The other two design elements that I think are a huge improvement over the Yakima rack I had is the hitch mount uses a hand-tight hitch system vs. a threaded screw. It really feels solid in the hitch. I also love the foot or hand release lever to put the rack up or down. Much easier to use. If I had to leave one critique, I wish they had designed the Sherpa with the built in locking system rather than having to carry around the cords and locks separately. I know they did this on the NV but did not want to spend the extra money for that. While not my primary reason for purchasing, the design esthetics are really nice with these racks - they just look good.

Great for MTB, not perfect for road

I love this rack for my MTB. It’s definitely high quality and it’s SO quick and easy to load your bike. The semi integrated cable lock is a really nice feature for the times that you are dropping by the grocery store on your way home from the ride. I just took this rack on it’s first long drive from Tucson to Denver. Again, it was perfect for my MTB, but my rim brake road bike’s caliper gets pushed to the side, because the arm that secures the front wheel is so chunky that it hits the caliper from the side. Long story short, I can’t imagine a better MTB rack, but if you are just looking for a road rack, I would recommend something from Thule or Yakima. Competitive cyclist has a GREAT return policy and even better customer service, so if it doesn’t work for you, no big deal! They always put the customer first!

Fun Fact: Backcountry and CC are owned and operated by the same crew.

Great for folks with cranky backs!

I love this rack. I have back trouble, so my priorities were to have a rack that was light for easy installation and removal, and easy to operate without stooping. This rack checks both boxes with ease. It's the lightest rack in its class, and the lever to raise and lower the rack is very conveniently located from a standing position. It's so easy to use, and the aluminum construction resists corrosion. Customer service is phenomenal, both from Backcountry and Kuat. The rack arrived with a small cosmetic blemish in one of the trays. Backcountry was willing to replace the whole rack free of charge. However, I called Kuat, and they simply shipped me a new tray for free! This is one of the most satisfying purchases I've made in a while.

Incredible

OMG, this is a wonderfully designed product that is built extremely well. This company has thought about the entire consumer experience -- even the box this comes in is designed to assist you in holding the parts during the assemble process. I assembled it while drinking my morning coffee, using the quality tools that were provided. As another review said, "you know you're dealing with a quality product when you want to keep the tools they provide. It's true. Anyway, this product assembles into one, rock-solid unit that holds my bike(s) firmly so that there is zero sway while driving and zero rattle from the hitch. I thought I'd be disappointed giving up my Thule racks....not so! In fact, I had called them directly for some customer service to help me select a new rack and was so disappointed in the help they provided (or didn't provide, in this case), that I went looking elsewhere and found this. Glad I did!

I don’t always leave reviews....

But when I do it’s because of exceptional customer service. The rack is fantastic. The customer service from Competitive Cyclist was even better. Thank you! Tim

Great Customer Service from Backcountry. Great FREE 2 Day Shipping. Now for the Rack, I love It. Easy assembly and great low profile. Rack looks great and functions perfect. I was looking for a tray rack that I could lower the tailgate of my P/U (2018 Nissan Titan) and not hit the rack. Tried several others and they were a no-go. This one is perfect. Thanks Backcountry and Thanks Kuat.
