Cinder MIPS Helmet

You don't have a full race calendar or a spot on the local cycling team, so gear should be more about function than style. Open, empty roads and long sojourns on Sunday afternoons are where you find your joy in cycling, and gear that helps you stay out longer always ends up being what you reach for first. The Giro Cinder MIPS Helmet fits that description aptly, so if your old lid has seen better days, protect your grey matter and stick to your principles by upgrading.

Inspired by the competition-minded Synthe, the Cinder shares more than just a similar sounding name with its pricier sibling. Giro anchors the Cinder with a streamlined, aerodynamic shell much like the Synthe's, and ensures it maintains ample airflow out on the roads by carving 26 vents into its shell. Its light, unfussy design succeeds just as well in weekend fondos as it does on weeknight group rides, while inside the helmet, a MIPS liner adds subtle, but important protection. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology that appears in the form of a thin inner basket, which rotates upon impact to absorb brain-damaging rotational energy generated in certain crashes. The fifth version of Giro's tried-and-true Roc Loc 5 fit system makes lateral and vertical fit adjustments easy to do with one hand, while Air-Fix padding and a ponytail-compatible design give the Cinder an adaptable, versatile fit.

  • Protect your brain with this classic, lightweight helmet
  • MIPS technology reduces brain-damaging forces in some crashes
  • Capable In-Mold construction lends impact protection
  • One-handed fit adjustment makes on-the-go tweaks easy
  • Wealth of vents keep air moving while you're riding

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

Previous Giro Helmets fit well. This helmet made my wife ask if the helmet was a kids helmet. This helmet is so small, it seems like it was mislabeled from Giro.

Great Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Very light weight which also allows plenty of air to keep your head cool. After 5 minutes you will forget you have it on. Just for the record, Competitive CYCLIST is a great company to work with. Amazing customer service and shipping is as promised. I bought two helmets at different times and they both arrived in perfect condition and on time

Great fit for oval-ish heads

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I ride for a Giro sponsored team and this is what I use on the road and mtb as Giro's Aether and Vanquish (and numerous older Giro models) are too round for my head. This helmet fits more like Kask, Specialized, and Oakley. The quality actually seems a fair amount better than the Synthe! And the MIPS system is integrated better in my opinion than that in the Synthe.
AND, there is no problem with Oakley glasses hitting the retention device like there is with KASK helmets. And, yes, the Cinder holds those glasses VERY well in the front vents when necessary without obstructing your view and with ZERO movement (it can be tricky putting the glasses in if you're also wearing a hat as the hat material can slightly get in the way, so you just have to wiggle the glasses some).
A size medium fits me very well with just enough room for thermal cycling hats and regular cycling caps. My head measures 57cm and I wear a 7-1/8 in non-cycling hats. You don't always have to have the most expensive models to get what's best for you!

Solid Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

There isn’t a ton of interior padding, but the helmet is very comfortable nonetheless. The tightening dial in the back is a little small but gets the job done. Good helmet overall.

Nice Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Got the hivs yellow and it is nice. Not the lightest nor heaviest helmet I have ever owned, but it does what it is supposed to and offers decent ventilation. Solid helmet!

Roadie Ripper

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great option for keeping your dome safe on the road. Very nice fit system and great ventilation are offered with this helmet. Your head is snug as a bug with this and looks good too!

Do you have a photo of the inside? Giro's padding varies greatly at different price points.

A helmet, just it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a lot of helmets, different brands, I really spect more. I can't say it is not good, but didn't impress me at all. It has a nice look, a fits good and it is not heavy. The Foray must be the same but shipper. The mips, holds your hair when you take it off. I should have chose the Synth. I didn't became my favorite, keep using other one.

I've had this happen with all MIPS. The key is to loosen the fit adjustment before pulling the helmet off. It won't be so snug against your hair.

Excellent Pricing on a Quality Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

This helmet was my 1st purchase with Competitive Cyclist. I was able to snag the helmet at a 50% savings. It shipped and delivered as promised.

Fit is great and provides enough room for a winter shell and sunglasses. This is a MIPS system and worth the step up in safety.

I highly recommend Competitive Cyclist. Great pricing on a consistent basis.

Very Nice

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I really am pleased with this helmet. I have 3 different brands the straps on the Giro are the best. MIPS is very comfortable.

great helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium

Wanted to try a MIPS helmet, also like that this doesn't have the long "duck tail"/aero back end to it like most helmets. Light, looks good and vents well. Fits true to size and price and service were great.

functional and comfortable

  • Fit: True to size

I've used the helmet numerous times. It is quite light, has good ventilation and very comfortable.

Great Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Excellent construction, and good looks, if you are on the edge of a size if you can try the helmet somewhere before you buy it will be preferable

Does anyone know how well this helmet holds sunglasses?

It holds Oakleys (the new ones without a top frame--forget what they're called) VERY well--as in they won't even budge while mountain biking aggressively. Kind of tight to put in (especially if wearing a hat underneath), but they ain't gonna end up on the floor unless you're on the floor.
