FOX Racing Shox 34 Float 29 130 3Pos-Adj FIT4 Fork (51mm Rake) $879.00
Sensitivity is its strong suit.
We don't need to tell you about FOX's prolific reputation in the suspension marketplace—just look at the smattering of premium trail bikes and chances are it'll have a Float 34 already installed. Taking this industry dominance into consideration, we were pleasantly surprised to see the 2018 iteration of the 34 Float 29 130 3Pos-Adj FIT4 Fork (51mm Rake) with reworked internals for an even smoother ride across trail inconsistencies and small obstacles. In fact, the engineers at FOX gave the 34 Float a new damper tune with a reconfigured shim stack that increases its sensitivity to bumps, rocks, and roots on the trail. Following suit in the sensitivity department, FOX revised the Float air spring with EVOL technology borrowed from their rear shocks. This makes it even more supple and smooth, as less force is required to initiate its travel.
The 34 Float matches the balanced feel of your 29er trail rig with its 34-millimeter stanchions. 34-millimeter stanchions are lighter than burlier offerings of the 36 Float, yet they retain a high level of stiffness for precise tracking across rough terrain. This means you'll have a reliable, smooth fork that's composed across technical trails, but without holding you back on steep climbs and long rides through the backcountry. This particular 34 Float is the top-shelf Factory version with Kashima-coated stanchions for greater sensitivity to small bumps, as well as a 51-millimeter rake that gives your 29er nimbler handling at slow speeds.
The big story with the 34 Float is the Fit4 damper with 3-position adjust. Something to note the damper's reconfigured design makes it easier than ever to add or remove volume spacers, so you can fine-tune its progressiveness without wasting precious time. With the 3-position adjust, you can swap between Open, Medium, and Firm settings on-the-fly. Open mode gives you 22 clicks of low-speed compression tuning for getting its feel just right. Medium is nice for longer climbs and smooth trails where extra efficiency is desired. And when you're seeking a practical lock-out, the Firm setting comes in handy for grinding up fire roads and asphalt road approaches to the trail.
