Description

This RWS Thru Bolt w/Aluminum Lever is the latest version of DT's RWS technology. Where the standard RWS Thru Bolt uses a carbon reinforced plastic lever arm, you'll get a lever made from machined aluminum here. The weight is exactly the same, and you'll perhaps get more durability in the event of a crash with these alloy bits, not to mention the appeal of the more sculpted look.

RWS stands for Ratchet Wheelmounting System. It has the look of a quick release (minus the springs), but in place of a lever attached to a cam, there's a lever attached to a bolt head. Turn the lever clockwise to tighten. When there is sufficient resistance (15nm), stop turning. Press the red button to position the lever in a place where it won't get knocked around. You're done, and the benefits are pretty obvious. It provides up to 50% greater clamping force than with a conventional quick release, which can be a great thing when riding a disc brake in front as it will resist the twisting forces better. And, they make it super easy to pop your wheels off your bike. The oversized shafts are high-strength, light weight 7075 aluminum, as are the lever arms. Want it off? Just start turning the lever counter-clockwise to loosen.

The DT Swiss RWS Thru Bolt w/ Aluminum Lever is available to fit three hub configurations -- Front 9x100mm, Rear 10x135mm, Rear 12x142mm (Syntace X-12 type). The weights are as follows: 49g (front 9 x 100) 63g (rear 10 x 135.)

Didn't fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a high-quality, well made product from DT Swiss, but it didn't work on my frame. If your non-threaded axle hole is not counter-sunk, then this is not the thru axle for you. I think this is for a Syntace frame. If you look closely at the 2 product photos, one has a flat washer and the other a tapered washer which is not removable. The flat washer is probably on the front/fork version. I ordered the 12mm x 142mm for the rear of my Lynskey Cooper CX frame as part of a QR to TA conversion. The size and thread pitch are correct, but my frame is not tapered like the washer on the axle. Consequently, the threaded end of the axle doesn't extend all the way to the far edge of the frame, making the axle effectively a few millimeters too short. Even though it works, it's not ideal and needed to be returned.

check your thread pitch

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

These have a 1mm thread pitch. Some frames ( mine for example) require a 1.5mm or other thread pitch. Check to make sure this is what you need.

I have DTswiss racheting skewers on my road bike, and they work great. I bet these would as well, if they fit my bike.

Agree. Same problem on my bike.
description of item should state thread pitch

Unanswered Question

Do these work with any hub? Looking to put one on my White Industries MI6 rear hub on my CX bike (10x135), and wondering if it's just a straight swap. Would love to throw some on my old 29er wheels too in that case (Bontrager Rhythm).

False Advertising

WARNING this product does not include the nut! It is shown as a complete unit axle and nut.

Thru-axle don't have "nuts" that is the point of the thru axle. Simplicity and convenience and very strong!

    works

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Cool, but cam based through bolts work well, too. I've never had an internal cam quick release get knocked open on the trail, but I have had these self loosen a bit, on the trail. Try to position the lever so that if it gets knocked or starts to self loosen for any reason, it will get stopped by your frame/fork.

    Stiff and easy to use

Wish this released years ago. A very simple and well executed idea. Increases stiffness, which is always a good thing. Arguably easier to use than QR. And you can position the lever at any angle, out of harm's way.

      finally

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The DT Swiss 10 mm Thru Bolt Skewer has been a great help in securing the rear wheel on my Santa Cruz Butcher frame compared to the old 10mm qr. The spring loaded mechanism is great! I am able to put the lever in exactly the position I want with very little effort and creates the correct bearing preload every time.

      Great upgrade from Standard QR

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got this because I went to the 135 x 10 on the rear wheel and this system is as easy if not easier than the standard qr. I was pretty surprised the difference in stiffness this upgrade has made from this one little bolt, make the change if you have an option with your current hub setup.
