Something about a crankset really ties a group together, both from an aesthetic and performance standpoint. Given that it’s the centerpiece of the bike and the first drivetrain component that's responsible for transmitting our energy to the rear wheel, we feel like the crankset affects not only how our bike looks, but how it responds and shifts as well. Campagnolo's latest move to 12-speed necessitated a new crankset and we're happy to announce its pinnacle of crank design with the Super Record 12 UT TI Carbon Crankset.
The most obvious change over previous editions of Super Record and indeed the 12-speed Record cranks as well is at its redesigned spider, where two massive carbon structures join two of the four arms and thus the chainrings together. This adds a heap of torsional stiffness while lightening the load. Given that this is rotational weight and the added stiffness only leads to improved power transmission and crisper shifting, we feel this new design is revolutionary for Campy as well as creating a striking look at the heart of your ride. Campagnolo's Hollow Technology further affords more weight reduction without losing any stiffness or strength.
The aluminum chainrings each have their own set of mounting holes, further contributing to increased stiffness, while allowing the spider to possess a standardized bolt circle diameter, 112mm inner and 145mm outer, meaning the crank will accommodate compact 50/34t, mid-compact 52/36t, and standard 53/39t just by swapping the rings. The aluminum rings feature a special treatment and carefully designed shift pins and ramps leading to faster and smoother up and down shifts, even under full power. Furthermore, the symmetrical design of the inner chainring's teeth improves stability when the chain is in a crossover situation. Just a few more notes about the chainring and spider, the q-factor remains the same at 145.5mm while the chainline accommodates 130, 135, and 142mm rear dropout spacing, and Campy claims the design and careful shaping is more aerodynamic.
Campagnolo didn't have to redesigned everything though, as it felt some elements were refined and left well enough alone. Case-in-point, Ultra-Torque is still used to join the spindles on each crank arm together. Its self-centering, self-aligning Hirth joint provides the same power transmission as heavier, single-piece spindles while still allowing for a plethora of BB options to fit almost any frame on the market. The titanium axle and single-bolt construction are simple, elegant, efficient — everything you'd expect from Campagnolo.
Campy's CULT bearings are another returning star. CULT's ceramic bearings and Cronitect races are so smooth, when the chain is off, a small breeze is all it takes to get the cranks spinning freely. Think about this reduction in friction and the fact that you'll turn the cranks over upwards of 30,000 times on a 5-hour ride and how that claimed 3.5 watts per pedal stroke adds up with respect to the average energy loss from bearing friction.
The Super Record 12 UT TI Carbon Crankset comes in 170, 172.5, and 175mm lengths and in the following chainring combinations: 50/34, 52/36, and 53/39t.
