Yakima SkyBox 21 Carbonite Cargo Box $629.00
Make your road trip that much more pleasant.
Five people's about the maximum number you can fit in a car, and if you have to stuff gear in there too? You might as well stay at home and watch re-runs. Throw the Yakima SkyBox Carbonite 21 Cargo Box on the roof of your vehicle, though, and your road trip will seem like a first-glass luxury cruise. Yakima's Carbonite material is 80% recycled and extra-lightweight, so you can carry more gear without weighing your car down, and it has internal lid stiffeners and an aerodynamic design for increased efficiency and less noise. The SkyBox opens on both sides and closes tightly with a SuperLatch secure closure system, and also has an integrated SKS Lock system to keep five people's gear safe.

Fits a ton of stuff!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I bought this 21 cu ft model after testing a smaller model I borrowed from a friend. I love how much stuff I can fit in this larger model! We recently went camping and I fit the following: two folding beach chairs, two camp chairs, two rolled up air mattresses, two sleeping bags, a double stroller, a 5-gallon bucket of sand toys, a large shovel, a six-person tent, six beach towels, two medium-sized duffel bags, a small toolbox, four water guns, a bag of marshmallow skewers, a bike pump, four bike helmets, a bag of elbow / knee / wrist pads, and other small items that fit in the cracks! I also love how quiet it is (unnoticeable with sunroof cover closed), how easy it is to install (I was able to lift it to the top of my Toyota Sequoia by myself, mount it onto the factory-installed Toyota roof crossbars, and have it fully installed within ten minutes), and that it opens from both sides of the box. The texture of the carbonite lid looks nice and does a good job hiding dirt and scratches. After our first big trip on the box, I could not decipher a difference in MPG. With the box fully loaded, the car is definitely a little more top heavy but the Sequoia handled it fine. My only gripe is that the box is so big I'm not sure where to put it when it isn't in use. We may end up needing to just leave it on top of the car!
Note: Instructions say not to load the box with more weight than your car's crossbars can support. My car is rated at ~150 lbs. I'm pretty sure this load exceeded that, but I could not see any bending of the bars and decided to take the risk. No problems so far. The box handled it great!
It's a huge box
I bought this box from backcountry with the help from an online chat associate. I finally received the box this morning from CEVA Home Delivery. Yakima Skybox has better quality than the Yakima rocket box and I really like the dimple carbonite. This is a huge box to put on my Acura MDX.
I'm not impress much with CEVA Delivery. They did not allow me to open the box to check for damage unless I sign the paper first. According to an email from backcountry, I need to check the box for damage then accept or deny the shipment. Luckily, my box does not have any damage.
For crossbars that extend beyond the siderails, can this be attached so that one side is attached on the outside of the siderails?
Hey Andrew - You can attach one side of this SkyBox outside the siderails, especially if you have another rack you need to attach on the other side of your crossbars. Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.
