King of dirt.

Fast and full of grip, the 2.4in-wide X-King 27.5in Tire rolls smoothly despite pronounced knobs. It also has Continental's high-TPI ProTection casing with Black Chili Rubber, making this voluminous tire perfect for the modern mountain bike. The tread pattern is the same as the rest of the X-King line, and it was developed for racing.

For that reason, offset and lowered center knobs are ramped for consistent speed. The offset also provides steady grip and efficient power transfer both accelerating and decelerating. For stable cornering, the shoulder knobs are taller than most to dig into loose trail surfaces.

Between the center and shoulder knobs there's a column of siped transitional knobs for better grip in wet conditions. Additionally, these knobs smooth the transition between the center surface and the edge of the tire, making the weight transfer from straight-line gas to braking and turning more confident and sure-footed.

Continental engineers also made use of its Black Chili compound. Essentially it's synthetic rubber with nano-sized particles to react to surface irregularities more effectively. This not only improves grip, but these particles also form a tighter bond to improve compound strength, lengthening tread life and reducing the chances that lugs will rip and tear. Compared to Continental's earlier-generation tire compound, Black Chili tires provide 20% less rolling-resistance, 30% more grip, and an improved tread life of around 5%.

The Continental X-King 27.5in Tire is available in the color Black and in a 2.4in width.

Durability issues

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Went through 3 of these things on my cross country bike a while ago. Switched to a different brand and never looked back. Continental road tires are awesome, but their mountain tires have some QC issues. Mine constantly leaked fluid from the sidewall, and then I was ripping tread knobs off after a month. When they were new, they do grip pretty well, especially for an XC tire.

Poor braking control and a puncture

I ran this tubeless on the rear Stan's wheel of my Mojo HDR I purchased at Competitive Cyclist. This tire likes to lock up and break away. I could get used to drifting corners, but locking up when you really need to stop quickly is not good.

I punctured this tire beyond use in the knobby area, after less than 10 rides or 3 months of use. That could have been driver error, but I did not have a lot of confidence in this tire to begin with.

Great tread design, wears a little quick

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I really love the way this tire rides. I use the 2.4 as a rear tire, and run the pressure a little low for better traction. It rolls hella fast but still hooks up when I need it to.
But I do feel like it is wearing a little too quick, and I've got some thin spots on the sidewalls that are a bit concerning. I'll probably get another one when it's dead, and if the next one wears just as quick, I'll probably try something new

Nice looking tire, weak sidewall

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a nice German made Black Chili tire at a great price from Competitive. Unfortunately the sidewalk failed on the second ride with under 18 miles on the tire. Ironically it failed next to the big Protection label emblazoned on the side of the tire. We were on a light gravel fire road with no obvious cause for the sidewall failure. I have several bikes and have never had such a failure with Schwalbe, MAXXIS or any other tire. Too early to know how the tire holds up or performs. It's still like new otherwise.
