Time's featherweight.

Most companies give you the weight of their bikes without pedals, This has nothing to do with weight, of course. It's because different riders prefer different pedal systems. It's a bummer , though, to buy an ultralight XC race bike only to find out that once you get it all kitted out it's not so ultralight anymore. Time feels you. Its ATAC XC 8 Carbon Pedals weigh only 284 grams a pair. That's just a hair over 10 ounces. And yes, we said per pair.

Time's ATAC (Auto Tension Adjust Concept) line of pedals follows the design principles of their road line. Simple design, easy engagement, plenty of float. Interestingly, ATAC beat their road pedals to a lightweight, composite-body pedal. The ATAC pedals were always seen as an alternative to Shimano mainly because you didn't need to fuss with figuring cant on the cleats, because the pedals were much harder to jam with mud, and because the spring tension never needs to be adjusted.

The one adjustment the user can make is whether the release angle is 13 or 17 degrees. And this is done by running the cleats one way or in reverse. While the Time ATAC may look similar to the younger Crank Brother's pedals, the spring design is inherently different, offering consistent cleat retention regardless of what happens to the bottom of the pedal. Another advantage over pedals of similar float in the mountain bike world is the tension of the ATAC system: offering a more consistent release, and a more stable feeling underfoot.

The Time ATAC XC 8 Carbon Pedals are compatible with any standard crank system. They come in Black/red.

  • Carbon body with chrome steel axle
  • Release angle options of 13 or 17 degrees

do any of your XC mountain bike pedals offer free float similar to Speedplay frog (which you don't seem to carry)?

Frogs have lost a lot of their luster, mostly because people have realized that all the float that other companies offered was more than enough to allow any rider to ride. There are even lighter release pedal systems today, and the adjustable spring tension in other pedals are enough to get anyone able to use them. I would suggest the Shimano SPD mountain bike pedals should you be looking for a trusted, adjustable clip in pedal.

Manufacturing defect

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This pedal has been amazing for 6 months, but two weeks ago one of the spring retaining pins started sliding out. I was able to push is back in, but it happened again today. A little internet research showed that this is a manufacturing problem that many others are experiencing.

Maybe the 2014 model has been improved, I don't know.

I had the same experience. Will return for warranty return.

After my original post, Time took about a month to send me the replacements. In the meantime I was using a pair of egg beaters. When the XC8's arrived I kept using the CB pedals until they needed a rebuild. So I've been using the replacements for less than a year and had the exact same issue again. I believe they are now out of warranty and I'm SOL.

Only pedal to ride

Great pedal. 3 stage adjustability is awesome and really makes a difference. I have been riding Time pedals for 6 years now and won't ride anything else.

Awesome Pedal - Awesome Store!!

I am done with Crank bros. so I switched to Time and they are great!! The clipping in and out is easy but positive engagement. Platform is just big enough to push down on if you are not clipped in which is nice when trying to remount on hill or technical area. Backcountry not only had a great sale price they also took care of me when I did have an issue with the pedal. Awesome customer service which keeps me coming back to spend my hard earned pennies.

Great pedals

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great set of light weight, durable pedals. The are easy to clip in and out of and also very fast in transition. If you are looking to lighten up your bike but not sacrifice quality, these are the pedals for you.
