Terra CLX EVO 650b Wheelset
In a “have your rocky, single track and eat it too” approach, Roval hand-builds the Terra CLX EVO 650b Wheelset to be an all-terrain conquer that stares down trails that send timid wheelsets back to the pavement. Hopping right into it, when judging 650b wheels, primary concerns are inner width and tire clearance, and Roval is eager to provide the Terra CLX EVO with seconds and thirds in these areas. Internal width is a 30mm — a feat of engineering that is not intended to pair with svelte road racing tires. The wide platform can support up to 2.1-inch (42mm) tires in safety and confidence. In other words, if the bike frame can clear it, the Terra CLX EVO may likely support it. Since Roval have been so kind as to deliver us with this generous helping of off-road performance, a question remains. What do we do with it? As Roval would say, “ride…anywhere you damn well please.”
The Terra CLX EVO is built with performance, versatility, and durability to help do-it-all, drop-bar bikes do it all. We want to bikepack and ride-singletrack with our gear on long weekend overnighters under the stars and then line up in the first row at the grass-roots CX course on Sunday with a fast wheelset that offers exceptional racing confidence. Roval whole-heartedly shares these goals and packs stellar characteristics into the Terra CLX EVO.
On-road, the Terra CLX EVO provides a lightweight chassis at 1303 grams that brings it close to the dedicated climber’s wheelsets Roval offers. Training rides that add up the vertical gain will be much more comfortable and exciting than on traditional, wide wheels that typically register an extra 300 grams or more. Careful work has also been done at the hubs. Roval uses their advanced technology to create the Aero Flange design, which boosts aerodynamics at the hub shell, and shields spoke ends from the wind. The design also translates to improved strength and durability with wide-bracing angles. And although the Terra CLX EVO is likely not the wheelset a dedicated road cyclist would consider, Roval does infuse the 25.6mm deep dish with subtle traits of aerodynamics to help improve handling and performance at top speeds.
Off-road is where the Terra CLX EVO shines, with seemingly endless support for running any rubber needed to match the trail conditions perfectly. Roval also tests the wheelset to meet mountain wheel standards for impact and durability and doesn’t shy away from stating that these wheels are meant for the hard stuff. DT Swiss Aerolite spokes lace to the AeroFlange hubs that utilize DT Swiss EXP Internals, which create a fixed connection between the inner ratchet and the hub shell to maintain correct alignment angles for faster engagement and increased stiffness. Accelerating out of bogged down switchbacks or finding engagement in tight rocky paths that have forced a quick back-pedal for balance are much easier and rapid when knowing the bike will go forward as soon as the legs press down.
The Terra CLX EVO fits Shimano/SRAM 11-speed cassettes, center lock disc brakes, and comes equipped with rim tape and tubeless valves. Roval even throws in a padded wheel bag as well.
