Why We Like The Pivot Trail 429 Pro XT/XTR Mountain Bike
Blurring the lines between, trail, cross country, and enduro, the Trail 429 Pro XT/XTR Mountain Bike keeps on surprising us with its adaptability. Modeled after its world-cup winning and cross-country driven Mach 4 SL, the frame redesign drops 300g off a size large frame compared to the previous generation of Trail 429. We don’t want to get caught in a trap of "climbs like a goat, descends like a demon" cliches, but with the new 429, it's hard to describe the feeling in a simpler way.
Geometry is covered with the new 429, and the longer, slacker, and steeper treatment we see on bikes nowadays hits home with Pivot’s new ride. Already over a degree slacker than its predecessor, the Trail 429 can be slacked out even further with the integrated flip-chip. The seat-tube is also half a degree steeper than the previous model, and for us out here in the mountains or down in the desert, we couldn’t be more thankful. The steep seat angle allows us to pedal hard up steep gradients without getting out of the saddle, and the DW link works overtime to make sure every watt is transferred onto the dirt.
New to the 429 is a vertical DW link, and with the FOX Live Valve-ready frame this bike is dedicated to the ascents as much as the descents. Even with 120mm travel rear and 130mm front suspension set-up, this bike is efficient. We’re half tempted to throw some XC-specific tires on here and snag some up and downhill KOMS on our local cross-country loops. And we can certainly do that, but with this bike being equipped with knobby 2.4in Maxxis tires, it begs to smash down descents at wide-open speeds.
Pivot’s new frame technology sticks with their esteemed hollow-carbon layup, but like the new Switchblade, now offers a unique layup for each frame size. For instance, a size small frame is no longer just a carbon copy of a size extra-large, as the tubes use less material to compensate for the added stiffness of naturally shorter tube lengths. Likewise, on an XL frame with longer tube lengths, the frame is beefed up to maintain an appropriate level of stiffness. This proprietary tech means our smaller friends don’t complain about a stiff and harsh ride, and our larger friends don’t complain about too much frame flex or the bike feeling ‘noodly’.
*Due to a high demand in the global supply chain and bike industry since the start of the pandemic, material weight and exact components are subject to change. We are working diligently to keep tech specs updated, and any adjustments will be of equal or better spec level. PIVOT Trail 429...AGAIN!
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- medium
- Height:
- 5' 10.5"
- Weight:
- 175
This is the third bike I bought from Competitive. The first was an Ibis Ripley...which was very nice and very fast, but I couldn't keep it quiet...there were always creaks and pops from the bushings. I prefer the bearing system PIVOT uses, even if they weigh more than bushings. My second bike was the Version 2 Trail 429. I liked it so much, after a couple of years and a few thousand miles I bought the newest iteration! I've ridden several other bikes in the meantime (when I travelled and rented bikes a the destination), and something is "just right" about the Trail 429. I'm at the upper measurements for the medium size, but the medium feels just right to me with a 30 mm rise handlebar. I was curious how the vertically-mounted shock would work compared to the horizontal shock on my earlier version, and am happy to report the vertical-mount climbs at least as well...and it seems to react quicker to harder hits. I was quick to put protective film over the paint on much of the bike, something I didn't do on my old PIVOT. This should help keep the rock-strikes and inevitable wear and tear rubs at bay. The Dissector tires were new to me (I tended to run Recon and Ardent), and these have more bite...which is nice. Kevin at Competitive has set me up with a shorter crankset, since I prefer 170's to the 175's that come on a medium. Now that I've ridden a few hundred miles on the 175's, it will be nice to see if I get fewer pedal-strikes on the 170's...if not, I may "flip the chip" to raise the bottom bracket a bit, and give that a go. I'm very happy with the new shock performance and little tweaks to deal with mud/debris from the back tire on this new design. Of course, I can't tell there are 300 fewer grams of weight on this frame, but it surely doesn't hurt to have a strong AND lighter frameset. Wheels are the same, and I expect they'll give me thousands of mile of trouble-free service, just like my old ones did. I'm very happy with the new changes and after-delivery service from Kevin. THANKS!

Awesome Well-Designed Trail Bike
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
The Pivot Trail 429 is everything you could want in a trail bike. It is nimble and responsive where you need it going uphill and let's loose with great travel on the downhill. The front fork angle hits it just right for tackling big (and small) obstacles, corners extremely well, and the seat angle is perfect for everything on the trail. Although it doesn't quite handle big drops as well as my Evil The Following, the difference is only marginal. The front Fox 34 fork is quite fantastic. I agree with other reviews that the rear suspension feels appropriately sturdy in the locked position, doesn't bottom out in the open position, and has a very comfortable middle option. It is an aggressive bike that feels comfortable with either a casual ride or tackling black trails here in Colorado. It's also designed well to place 1-2 water bottles or other small bags. I haven't used the flip chip yet, so not sure how much that would change the handling. Backcountry did an awesome job with the build and components. Other than the slightly expensive price tag, I really don't have any complaints!
