Description

Not a joking matter.

When it comes to days in the bike park, most of your time is spent laughing with your crew, blasting berms, and boosting off of rollers, but when it comes to protection, things get a bit more serious. That's why Ion builds the K-Pact Knee Pad out of rugged SAS-TEC performance padding, perforated neoprene, and Power Aramid that shields blow to keep you going back for more, even after taking a wicked digger.

SAS-TEC's padding is hard to beat when it comes to body armor, and the German innovators have been proving it for years with their motorcycle line. It uses 3D visco-elastic soft foam that has a knack for remaining pliable when you're riding, so it can move with you on the bike, and becoming a firm, shock-absorbing pad at the moment of impact. It's backed up with Power Aramid on top, designed to withstand abrasion and tears for longevity, and a breathable neoprene backing that provides a touch of impact-absorption, while wrapping your leg snugly for a secure fit. The pads feature silicone grippers at top and bottom to help them stay locked into place, along with two hook-and-loop straps that can be cinched down for a fuss-free descent.

  • Burly pads that take your safety seriously
  • SAS-TEC padding is built for moto, and dialed for bike
  • Visco-elastic foam moves with you, hardens on impact
  • Perforated neoprene lets fresh air in to keep you cool
  • Withstand abrasion with Power Aramid top layer
  • Silicone straps prevent pads from slipping
  • Lock pads in place with two hook-and-loop straps

Excellent knee pads, GREAT fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was in between sizes (by an inch exactly) on ion's size chart so I went a size up from M to L. It was the right choice. They are snug, but in a reassuring way that lets me know they won't slip in a crash. Just at first they felt a little harsh but I wore them for a full days ride and they fit like a second skin.

Definitely get the zips if you're on the fence. These fit so well that it takes some meditative patience to get them off and on properly, shoes off and rotate the pads around your heel every time. Not a complaint, just a fact of life. I don't care about having pads I can pull on over my shoes. That kind of laziness has ruined more pairs of launch pros than I would like to admit.

They are VERY well constructed. Quadruple stitched seams, excellent neoprene "webbing", they look like they're going to last. Lots of the time with mountain bike apparel/padding you hear a stitch pop the first time you put them on, there's little tears after a while from stretching...Not this time.

Side note: Sas-tec is the best in mountain bike padding according to all the science and user feedback I could find. D30 and VPD have batch inconsistencies in manufacturing as it turns out, give inconsistent readings in the lab to the tune of 10 kN at times. As well, D30 is known to crack and fall apart.

The Sas-tec pads used cover a good portion of the shin and my entire knee cap. A very secure feeling compared to some main competitors.

Hopefully I can edit this for an end of season durability report. For now all I know is they look rad, which means I'm definitely going faster (that and my confidence is UP).
