Versatile to the nth degree.

This time of year, every season, bicycling apparel companies step up with pieces they claim are the one-and-only jacket you need for your cold-weather riding this year. While it's true that many live up to the promise of being both warm and breathable for a variety of conditions, few can match the all-around versatility of garments like the Gore Bike Wear Element Windstopper AS Zip-Off Men's Jacket, thanks to its easily-removed sleeves that turn the jacket into a vest in seconds.

But that's only half the genius of this particular Element jacket. The other half? The fabrics. Gore employs its proven Windstopper Active Shell material to ensure that the wind and cold don't ruin your ride. The material, sometimes abbreviated WS AS, is a very light but very tough two-layer fabric that gives you superb protection from the wind and even light rain while still allowing accumulated moisture within to evaporate quickly and efficiently. As a bonus, like we said, it's very light, making it easily packable, particularly those sleeves once you roll them up and stuff them in a pocket to transform the jacket into a wind-ready vest.

The Element Zip-Off jacket is easy to live with beyond its convenience, too. The elbows are preshaped and the collar is ergonomically designed for comfort in the cycling position. The jacket's relatively long tail prevents spray upon your rear, and the entire lower hem can be adjusted with an elastic draw cord. There's one zippered chest pocket up front and a center rear zippered pocket on the back, as well, and for safety's sake, there are reflective logos, piping, and other details to ensure that you're visible along the roads when the sun's not out.

The Gore Bike Wear Element Windstopper AS Zip-Off Men's Jacket is available in five sizes, from Small to XX-Large, and in the colors Black, Splash Blue, Brilliant Blue, Black/Neon Yellow, Red, and Fresh Green.

  • Converts to vest with zip-off sleeves

Gore had the wrong kind of biker in mind

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Based on Gore's reputation and video for this product, I was pretty pumped when the UPS guy dropped it off. Sadly, within 15min the jacket was packed up for return.

The material is nice, and the fit (contrary to what one reviewer wrote) is true to size. Remember: this is a jacket for cycling, so it's going to be a close fit. Look at Gore's website for a product video if you want to see how this thing fits. They show a model wearing it, and give you his sizing info so you can gauge what you'd need.

The issue is simply this: the thing looked ridiculous on me. Because of the convertible nature of the jacket, with the sleeves zipped on the seams at the shoulders form rigid, sharp angles that make it look like you're wearing a lightly padded motorcycle jacket. Really bad stuff.

Definitely would not recommend this one.

One jacket Multiple uses!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

his is my favorite Gore Bike Wear jacket because of its versatility, longevity, fit, and design. I have had this jacket for a year and it still looks and feels like it did when I first put it on. The Windstopper technology will keep you fresh and comfortable, keeping the wind from pounding your body. Though not waterproof, the water resistancy will keep you dry in most wet conditions. A front, chest pocket and a back, large zip pocket will store a large of amount of goodies for your ride. As part of Gore's Element line, this recreational piece has a bit more of a comfort fit, though by no means is it baggy. For someone who is tall and thin, this jacket fits great since it is longer on the torso, but not wide on the chest and hips. The simple design is appealing for those who like to wear their jacket off the bike as well. The zip-off sleeves make it perfect for just about any weather condition!
