Description

Unabashedly fast.

ENVE’s carbon fiber rims have continually defined the genre, and the 50fifty 29in Wheelset is set to do precisely that for high-caliber XC racing. As part of ENVE’s M-series rim lineup, it’s not only wider than the XC rim that it replaces, but it’s significantly lighter, too. Perhaps most surprisingly, this feat has been accomplished without sacrificing durability. If you have big goals on the race track this year, the 50fifty wheels are the advantage you’ve been looking for.

When ENVE set about redesigning the replacement for its featherweight XC rim, the design parameters were clear — make them lighter, wider, and smoother riding. And unsurprisingly, the team in Ogden delivered in spades. The 29in M50 Fifty rim now weighs a paltry 330g, shaving a full 50g per rim as compared to the 29 XC. Part of this weight savings has been accomplished by trading in traditional bead hooks for a redesigned beadless hook bead, which is both lighter and more impact resistant. The width has grown to 21mm internally, which is an increase of 3mm. That translates into a rounder tire profile, for greater cornering stability, and more rubber on the ground at any given time. By relieving material from the rim, ENVE has taken the M50 Fifty’s tuned ride feel to previously unseen levels. Anyone who’s familiar with ENVE knows the fanatical lengths that its engineers go to in order to achieve a perfect ride feel. Accordingly, the M50 Fifty has been tuned for greater vertical compliance, thereby reducing rider fatigue, without sacrificing the fantastic lateral rigidity that endows ENVE with the “on rails” feeling for which they’re prized.

The rim tells most of the story, but these wheels are hand built in Utah, to exacting standards, which provides the longevity you’d expect out of a class-leading wheel system. They’re laced to DT Swiss 240 hubs, with your choice of either a centerlock or standard 6-bolt rotor interface. Additionally, you can choose between a standard freehub or an XD driver, for use with SRAM’s one-by-eleven drivetrains. The 240s have become a staple for their lightweight construction, remarkable durability, and tool-free service, which makes them a perfect match for an ENVE wheelset, which might very well outlast your next bike, or two.

The ENVE M50 Fifty 29in Wheelset is available with either an XD or standard freehub, with centerlock or 6-bolt hubs, and in the color Black.

M50s on the Niner Air 9

Check out this customer's single speed with M50s!

M50s on the Niner Air 9

ENVE 50’s are nothing short of amazing…overall ride, hard cornering, tracking, ability to accelerate, overall speed….I’ve ridden no equal in 25 years of hard core mountain biking. Compliant, stiff, durable, lightweight….still trying to figure out where the compromise is (well, wallet I suppose….). Never drink great wine or a great Scotch, everything else will pale in comparison and will disappoint. Add to this: never buy ENVE wheels….this too will ruin you and you’ll never settle for riding anything less.

PS - call Virginia @ 801-736-6396 extension 4756 (or use the 800 number)...she was super helpful, incredibly responsive, and extremely knowledgable when looking at options for this Niner Air 9 RDO and ENVE custom build. I'll never buy or build another bike without working with her!

game changer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I built up a nice new XC race bike and skimped on wheels to save some money. Looking back I'm glad I did because then when I put the M50 on this week I could see that they were worth every penny. I can't say that there is a huge difference sometimes between products, but the difference between these and my "starter" wheels was night and day. They were fast, confidence inspiring, not to mention light. I can't ride anything else now. if you have questions on the M50 feel free to contact me directly kylebrown@backcountry.com

Light, Stiff, and Strong

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These wheels are some of the absolute best XC/Trail options on the market. Definitely a light weight, stiff, race wheel that you can ride every day on. Would also make an excellent gravel/CX wheel with the addition of a road 11 speed freehub body. If you have the means to spring for these wheels, I'd definitely recommend it.

LIGHT, STRONG, AND COMFORTABLE TOO

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used this wheel for both training and racing. I have ridden it on hardtail and full suspension bikes. Simply put, this wheel has no equal. I have ridden and raced other carbon and high-end aluminum wheels. You either have to sacrifice weight, durability, or comfort. Those trade-offs are a thing of the past with the M50. And a very generous 5 year warranty should put any durability concern to rest. Ride this wheel hard and don't worry about it. You will be faster.

Note: I have put a large variety of tires on this bike. Tubeless ready or not doesn't matter. Every tire I have tried seals up well and mounts easily.

Over $2700 for a wheelset?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Let's face it. When it comes to high end XC bike parts, the bottom line is the WEIGHT. Period. It's a never ending battle which manufacturer makes the most ultralight bike parts each year. Why is Enve parts so expensive? I always wondered about that. Supposedly these are the lightest XC carbon wheelset they make? $2718??? For a pair of wheelset? What the hell they've been smoking?

I own a Specialized S-Works Epic World Cup, which is one of the lightest full suspension XC bike ever made(tick over 20lbs) and it comes with Roval Control SL Wheelset. And this wheelset alone costs $1800 retail. And wow, Enve weighs 9 grams less. That's equivalent to 2 packets of sugar, but costs almost a grand more? Save yourself almost a thousand bucks and get the Roval SL. And yes they are "stiff", the most popular word in bike universe.

Over $2700 for a wheelset?

Please, how about a review of the way the wheelset performs, the Enve's being 9 grams less than your wheelset is irrelevant.

I have them and abused them on XC trails and moderate singletrack trails, rock gardens, etc. They are already on their second frame. When they changed them, I asked the shop to true the wheels; they said that there was no need to. Not then, not now and probably never. I'll bet you anything that your Rovals need truing ASAP. That is the difference in price among a few others.

stiff and light

This is an awesome wheelset! Just picked up a Yeti that was spec'd with these and I'm extremely satisified. Very stiff and light weight . They are ideal for XC racing but durable enough to be an everyday wheel as well. If you haven't experienced carbon on the trail its a very unique feel that will have you instantly sold. Highly,Highly recommended!

What is the actual weight for the 6 bolt IS hub version?

Will this setup fit a Niner Air 9 RDO?

Will this setup fit a Niner Air 9 RDO?

Hi, I run these wheels on my Niner Air 9 RDO but the stock options available here won't work with rear quick release. But you can give Enve a call and ask what it would take to convert these hubs so they'd work with you Niner. It's worth it for such a killer frame and wheel setup.

The best way to set these up for QR is with DTS0029 and DTS0008 (only works with 6 bolt option). This uses the solid thru bolt for added stiffness/ performance.
