When Cervelo set out to make their first-ever mountain bike, they were on a mission to develop a cross-country race machine, and the new ZHT-5 is just that. The engineers at Cervelo utilized their time-tested offroad carbon layup along with progressive, performance-focused geometry to create a bike that is downright fast. The 74-degree seat-tube and 69-degree head-tube angles may not seem like anything special, but combined with an ultra-stiff frame, we find ourselves putting out some serious power on tight uphill switchbacks and mid-pack passes. Cervelo didn’t forget about its aerodynamic roots either. They opted for a headset cap that allows all the cables to be fully internally routed, giving us a clean look and a drag-free cockpit. We can throw 2 water bottles in the front triangle too so we have plenty of hydration in tow for our training rides.
The ZHT-5 GX AXS build utilizes SRAM’s ultra-reliable GX AXS drivetrain to give us electronic shifting that can stand up to the abuse of a full season of racing and training, as well as not breaking the bank when it comes time for repairs and replacement parts. The 10-52t 12-speed cassette is paired with a 32t chainring upfront to give us plenty of climbing range, yet won’t slow us down on the flat sections. 29in Race Face ARC Offset wheels and a 100mm RockShox SID SL Select let us roll over just about any feature we come up against on course. A set of SRAM Level TL brakes let us dump speed when needed without a major weight penalty. The Cervelo ZHT-5 GX Eagle AXS mountain bike is ready to be our rocketship to the top of the podium.
