Race horse.

Castelli's isn't a name that we're used to associating with any tier but premium, so when the Italian manufacturer starts tossing around the "workhorse" label, it gets our attention. The Volo Bib Shorts are billed as utility race shorts. In terms of real-world hierarchy, this means that they fall somewhere between the Endurance X2s (made for — you guessed it — endurance riding) and the Free Aero Races, which have become one of our most beloved shorts over the past few years. Since the Volos are both compressive and aerodynamic, we can only assume that the workhorse racer label refers to their durability — a valued quality for those who likes their shorts to last longer than one race.

The legs are a blend of Affinity Lycra and Affinity BLC fabrics, both of which increase the shorts' affinity for keeping you comfortable and warding off fatigue with their high stretch on the inner thighs, aerodynamic texturing on the outer thigh, and gentle compression throughout. And unlike many other offerings that share a tier with the Volo Bib Shorts, the Affinity legs are finished with Castelli's Giro Air leg band. This wide swath of material keeps the fit secure without resorting to the usual tricks: pinching elastic inserts and silicone grip print that wears off in the laundry.

The shorts are finished with a KISS Air chamois, which takes the less-is-more approach for unobtrusive, non-bulky comfort. The ischial zone gets the lion's share of dual-density padding, while the sensitive perineum is protected by a relieving channel. The padding tapers to a clean finish at the edges, eliminating seams and ridges created by sudden topographical changes. The soft, bacteriostatic cover stretches to move with your body in the saddle. The bib straps holding everything in place are made of breathable, stretchy mesh, and reflective detailing just above the leg bands in the back helps keep you visible in low-light conditions.

way too small for its size

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I have a few Castelli 3/4 knickers that are great - but these shorts are not true to size - they are one or two sizes smaller than would indicate. I purchased the same size as my knickers and could barely get in - then exchanged for a size larger and while I can wear them, they are not comfortable. I guess Castelli saved a bit on fabric but I won't trust them again.

You should fit a large perfectly. I'm 5'8 and 178lbs. I fit a medium. Castelli are tight fit. You must pull them on, then pull each leg up from crotch and outside leg. Hope that helps.

Excellent bib for warm days

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I have been using Pearl Izumi (Select and Elite) bibs for a while as well as other local brands and the Castelli's Volo excelled all of them by far. Its breathability is superb and the chamois size is just right for my rides, which range from 80-120 km. Having said that, it became my favorite bib for warm days (temperature higher than 25C). Despite that, I would avoid using it for XC. The mesh cloth on the legs doesn’t seem to be much resistant to abrasion and scratches. I am 165 cm tall and weight 61 kg and small fitted as expected.

Super nice bibs!

Without a doubt Castelli makes some of the nicest cycling wear I have ever seen. These bibs are no exception. I've worn them on 2 rides so far. The padding is thick and luxurious. These are the most comfortable bibs I have owned. The quality and construction seem to be first rate. The fit is right on. I ordered the large size which is just what I needed for my 68" frame at 175 pounds.

    Love them!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

So, I was worried about dropping $90 on a pair of bib shorts, but I have been very happy with these. I've ridden about 100 miles on them already, and the material fits great around my legs and feels wonderful. The chamois padding could have a little more thickness, and I am getting some pain, but I think some of the problem is with my saddle, so can't blame it totally on these. Bottom line, they fit great, don't cost $200, and look awesome.

    My favorite wider chamois

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

The chamois is wider at the sit bones than most shorts, and the chamois Kiss Air is most comfortable yet for my ischial bursitis issue. I am 5'10

They also keep the private parts private, despite the thin fabric.

    Great Bib

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Great Bib....really nice. It runs true to size in the sizing chart. Got two pairs and they are great

Straps were too tight for me

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: medium

Love the cuffs Castelli uses on these. It's a rubberized fabric different from other bibs I've tried and it really holds with squeezing. A medium size fit my 5'10" frame from the waist down, but the straps are definitely made for someone with a shorter torso. They uncomfortably compress my shoulders. I'd prefer to have the strapless shorts.

nice quality, sizing is WAY, WAAAAAY off

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

build quality and construction seems really nice. thin shorts with a nice aero quality to them -- perfect for summer. i'm a 6'0" male, 196lbs, 34" waist with a trackie butt and non-thin quads. i barely got a quad through one of the legs. the sizing chart suggests a Large waist @ 34.6" but other reviews said sizes ran small, so i ordered an XL, which sizing chart suggests is right for 36.6" waist and 42.1" hips. returning for a XXL, sheesh. RUNS REALLY SMALL -- like 2-3 sizes too small.

    Better than expected bib shorts

    • Fit: Runs small

They match the Volo jersey really well but I got the grey and black Rodeo jerseys which also go perfect together with the red and the black Volo bib shorts. The shorts compress and fit snugly, the new Kiss3 Air is a big improvement over their original Kiss 3 chamois. They might fit tight but I'm a small 5'7" - 147lbs, 32" waist and the medium is just how I like a pair of compression/aero bib shorts. Snug and supportive.

Great fit if you use the whole chart.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

I normally wear a 33-34 waist which would indicate a large. My hips however are a bit over 42 so the chart says XL. I went with that and they're great. These are actually the basis for our club shorts and I am quite pleased. They are also one of those garments that are way more comfortable on the bike than off. Also, beware of using your favorite jeans sizing as a basis. I find many of them use what is called vanity sizing. Meaning you wear a smaller number than reality. Ask any woman over 45. It's been going on for a few decades.

the chest measurements for a 3XL are a L hanes t-shirt.. i'd say these sizes are for miniature people.... not the general cycling public

    Nice bib, odd sizing

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

Glad I ordered this in a few sizes to try. Definitely runs small as other have mentioned. If they fit you correctly, the chamois is nicely padded and of high quality, they look great, and they are a nice lightweight material. Matches well with the Volo jersey that has been on sale for a while, which makes the price of the kit reasonable.

Looks Really Cool - Runs Really Small

The bibs looks really cool but they run pretty small. Maybe it was my fault since I have not bought Castelli Bibs in a while. I might go back and order one size larger

Great Looking But The Sizing is Weird

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

These are great looking shorts, but the sizing chart led me astray. I ordered a medium thinking the listed waist size of 33.1" would be sufficient for a guy who typically wears 31" waisted Levi's, and should wear 30's during the height of the summer riding season. Anyhoo, these shorts were so tight and the straps so short, I was sporting an obvious case of male camel-toe. Sent them back right away. I should probably order a large, but I was afraid the compressive fit would be compromised. I generally love Castelli kits, but, man, they have some weird sizing and fit issues.

@Gaetano: do you happen to have a disproportionately longer torso than legs? Too bad Castelli doesn't include that measurement in sizing.
