Castelli Sorpasso 2 Tight - Women's $149.95
Warmth without the weight.
Sometimes it seems like when winter hits we either have the option of lightweight coverage with freedom of movement but minimal warmth, or bulky layers that keep us toasty but hinder our range of motion. Neither is an ideal cycling situation, which is why Castelli offers us the Sorpasso 2 Tights for women. Light enough that we still feel nimble and enjoy a large range of motion, but with tech-packed fabrics that pack a punch against Jack Frost, the Sorpasso 2 tights equip us to hit the roads through frigid conditions.
Before getting into the returning details, we'll dwell on what sets the Sorpasso 2 apart from the older Sorpasso models. The Sorpasso 2 puts emphasis on more rider support with a lumbar located band that gently stretches around your lower back to offer a bit of relief. This not only improves the fit, but also long term comfort by applying pressure where needed to relieve strain on your muscles.
Much like the Sorpasso of years past, the new Sorpasso 2 tights begin construction with strategically placed panels of Thermoflex Core2, and traditional Thermoflex fabrics. They both offer their own benefits, Thermoflex Core2 is compressive, warm, and insulating, with a nylon shell housing a hollow weave polyester base that traps heat within its fibers, and naturally pulls moisture away from the body to keep you from getting bogged down.
Traditional Thermoflex counters this with a gently stretching, fleecy fabric that feels soft against the skin and allows for the stretch needed for maximum comfort in the saddle. Just as in the older Sorpasso, this continues to provide support for on your muscles where needed for comfort and soft warmth with a stretch where needed for pedaling.
A Progetto X2 Air women-specific chamois backs up the burly external construction with support for sensitive skin and sit bones for long distance rides. The Progetto X2 Air is the same used before in the Sorpasso, and offers multi-density foam to cushion your seat for hours, 4-way stretch seamless fabric against your skin, and perforations in the foam to aid in moisture transfer, preventing fast-chilling perspiration from ruining your ride.
Like the older models, these bibs again see YKK Camlock ankle zippers for easy on and off, and large strips of reflective tape hit the calves to help with your visibility when riding in low-light situations.

Best Tight* *that's not a bib
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
The Sorpasso 2 Tight has become an even more versatile tight than I had hoped for. The tight is a great option for rides between about 50* and 30*, any colder than that and you'll be rather chilled!
I tested these out for the first time on a 45*, pretty windy, day here in Utah. Whether on the way up a climb or cruising down the rail trail for the last miles home in the dark (wooops), the Sorpasso 2 tight somehow had me at the right temperature. It felt a bit like the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants thing--except instead of fitting 4 bodies, these tights fit every temperature (within reason).
The stretch of the tight is pretty perfect: allowing for a great range of motion without getting sloppy. The one weird thing: the red fleece on the interior gives an odd sheen to the fabric when stretched. I really appreciate the thinner fabric used in at the back of the waistband--heat vents well, and it makes for a nice silhouette.
I like to pair these tights with the Trasparente Jersey, for those 40*ish days of fall and spring.
Sizing is true for Castelli--may need to size up. I usually wear a medium in most brands' bibs and tights (29

The Sorpasso are an excellent winter tight with the ability to be worn in a myriad of temperatures. I have worn them down to windy, 25 degrees and up to sunny, 55 degree days. The fleece lined tight will keep you warm and comfortable on the chilly rides when you have to pull yourself from a warm house. The Thermoflex fleece stops at the same point that the zipper starts. Great, snug fit with a high waist that keeps the band from digging into your stomach. The Progetto X2 Air chamois is the same high-end chamois found in the Free Aero Race bibs. If you are looking for one pair of comfortable tights to spend most of your cool fall, winter, and spring rides in, the Sorpasso 2 is for you.
