Idro Pro Jacket

Castelli continues to make a name for itself by creating race-worthy, breathable weather protection that many pros select and buy as it far surpasses standard team-issue equipment. The Gabba, the Tempesta, the Perfetto, all items that redefined what we've come to expect in foul weather riding attire. The Men's Idro Pro Jacket continues this tradition and with its inclusion of Gore's latest material, the jersey is super lightweight and highly packable without giving up an iota to weather protection. Castelli has a host of wet weather jackets but we feel this one best meets the needs of the racer. The breathability, lightweight, and cut are all carefully designed to excel during competition. It fits easily into a jersey pocket when not called upon however, in use it breathes so well we're likely just to keep it on.

The jacket's main material Shakedry, is a breathable membrane that combines the water- and windproof qualities that Gore-Tex is known for in the outdoor industry. It blocks wind and is totally waterproof, so a mid-ride deluge or even if you're starting off a ride in the rain, you'll stay dry. As impressive as the waterproofing is, its weight at 158g is maybe even more impressive. This feathery weight is possible because Shakedry eliminates the usual face fabric, so it's a two-layer membrane that preserves an uncompromising balance of breathability and protection while reducing bulk to expand Gore-tex's appeal to include elite cyclists. Gore’s new Topo stretch inserts at the elbow, shoulder, and side panel allow Castelli to created an even closer and more aero fit.

The front zipper is a waterproof Gore/YKK integrated model, and it works with the anatomically shaped wrists and seam taping to ensure there are no coverage gaps or points of water ingress to ensure you stay dry. A soft neck liner is a cozy luxury that will keep you going even as the conditions temp you to throw in the towel. Reflective trim help provide much-needed visibility in the conditions that you'll likely face in this jacket. At the back, two external pockets provide cargo space so you don’t have to unzip to reach your jersey pockets and below that, an elastic silicone waistband keeps the hem in place while the longer tail shields you from rear wheel spray.

    Pure Road Fit

    I've used it several times
    Size Bought

Castelli put the stretch panels in the right places to make the Idro Pro fit a lot like their road jerseys. I wear mostly Large T-shirts and XL Castelli jerseys, but i sized up to XXL in this and get a nice trim fit over a midweight long-sleeved jersey. the jacket stows nicely in the center pocket. The Gore Shakedry material is every bit as good as the hype would make us beleive.

Finally a form fitting rain jacket!

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    True to size

This jacket is a huge improvement over the initial Idro rain jacket. The first generation Idro, was a bit big for me and flapped in the wind. This is, in my opinion, the perfect piece to match with any of their race fit clothing, since the jacket is very form fitting, therefore you want your cycling clothing under it to be form fitting. I believe you have to size it for your intended use. My use is to use it if it is raining in the 50s F or warmer. I think if you want it for colder temps, you might have to size up, to allow a fit over thicker winter jerseys. I've used it for about 1 hour on a 3 hour ride, and to my surprise and delight, it didn't make noise, or fill up with air like a parachute, but stayed close to my body, as aero as a rain jacket most likely could be made. The fit on me is a little tight in some areas standing up. but in the riding position, the fit is sublime. Also, the breathability is fantastic, as I used it during temps of the upper 60s F to lower 70s F, and it didn't really make me warmer at all, which is great. There wasn't any clammy or moist feeling. There are stretch panels in several strategic areas (inside wrist / under armpits) to offer the give that's required in the cycling position, but it also allows for the jacket to be form fitting. The longer tail is a nice touch to keep your lower backside drier and there are two pockets on the rear with some reflective piping in some strategic spots. There are no zips on the jacket, other than the front zipper. It packs down into a single jersey pocket, but it's about 50% heavier than the original Idro rain jacket and bulkier, but I think the benefits of the pro jacket far outweigh the more minimalist original Idro. I'm going to say this runs true to size for Castelli aero clothing / form fitting clothing, so if you wear a medium sanremo speed suit or medium aero race jersey, the medium jacket will fit you. However, if I wore a long sleeve jersey and long sleeve base layer, even well fitting, the medium jacket might be a bit tight, and I might want to size up to the large. As I mentioned above, I wasn't interested in a rain jacket size that's comfortable for all possible rain conditions, but wanted one that would work nicely with clothing for temps in the 50s and higher.
