The new star in aerodynamics.

For the all-new Star Pro Helmet, Bell is relying on its roots in aerodynamic designs for motorized racing in order to bring the same technologies that allow for speeds topping 200 mph to the more humble velocities of the velo community. Bell's testing shows that the Star Pro beats Bell's light, airy Gage helmet by 1.5 meters and a leading aerodynamic competitor by .9 meters over a 300 meter stretch at a sprinting power output of 1150 watts.

Besides its shaping, the Star Pro's Active Aero, which involves a switch and a slider, is the key to its success. Sliding it open makes for more ventilation; sliding it shut blocks off the drag-creating vents at the helmet's front, presenting a unified front to the wind to take maximum advantage of the Star Pro's aerodynamic shaping. The Star Pro may be the only cycling helmet that literally has its own wind tunnel, as the Bell engineers built one for it to dial in the shape as much as possible. Even the straps are aerodynamic, incorporating Bell's new Cinch system to keep everything flat and unobtrusive while the FloatFit adjustment options ensure security.

The Overbrow Ventilation design helps strike a balance between ventilation and aerodynamics courtesy of airflow channels running through the Star Pro's under belly. The brow provides a gap between helmet and forehead, which funnels air into the channels, which let it move unimpeded over your head and out the rear exhaust ports for efficient cooling. For climbs, you'll definitely want to supplement this with the Active Aero vents open, but it does a reasonable job keeping you cool with the vents closed when you're flying under the red kite with only a matter of seconds on the bunch.

A helmet's aerodynamics and ventilation are nice, but it's important to bear in mind the reason why we're even discussing them. A helmet is protection first, aerodynamic second, and cool-looking third. (We do admit to sometimes inverting the second and third criteria. Happily, the Star Pro doesn't disappoint, achieving a non-mushroom head proportionality that eludes so many other aero lids.) To address this hierarchy of helmet needs, Bell designed the Star Pro with Progressive Layering, which graduates the density of EPS foam from soft on the inner sections to hard for the outer so that it progressively absorbs impact.

Too much aero, not enough comfort

this helmet is more of a marketing product. aero maybe, but at the cost of comfort. seems bell paid more attention to the outside design than the inside fit. the construction is unbalanced with a too heavy front and too thin forhead cushin. in general this helmet feels heavier than its weight suggests. not a high end product. dissapointing.

Does this come with the Visor?

    Hey Francisco,

The Bell Star Pro Helmet does not come with a visor although there is an option to get this helmet with a shield (Item # BEL007P).

Feel free to contact me directly with any more questions about Bell Helmets or if you are interested in setting up an order.

    Great helmet and brilliant concept

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

First, I will not be able to comment the aerodynamic efficiency of this helmet. I'm faster, but, I think it is all in, not on my head.
Second, let's be honest aerodynamic helmets are not pretty, but once you are through admiring your own look, it is for somebody else to see.
Third, this Bell is wonderful for winter and spring rides in changing conditions. The active aero vent is an ingenious solution for cold weather riding. It is like having a removable helmet cover at you disposal.
If there is one thing I might want in a new version is to change the vent cover to fit flush with the outer shell for cleaner look.
