Description

New kicks on the block.

In a flat-shoe world dominated by one brand, the Afton Keegan Shoe is the new kid on the block. They are casually inspired, with skate shoe design roots, but elevate themselves to perform hard when rubber hits the pedal. The shoes feature durable synthetic leather uppers that protect from trail debris and the elements, and Afton's own Intact rubber sole to keep you locked on to the pedals on chunky downhills.

The uppers wrap your foot up with durable synthetic leather that shields you from water and mud, and dries quickly. Venting in the toebox and lateral areas of the shoe keep cool air moving in, and sweat moving out, so your feet can stay comfortable on long rides. The toe box is reinforced with additional protection thanks to a coat of polyurethane that shields your toes from rock deflections, and trail debris. On the inside, a textile lining provides you with moisture wicking properties to pull away perspiration, and manage temperature. Enhancing comfort further is a foam insole with anti-odor properties that keep you feeling fresh, and molded support for your arch and heel that reduces force from impacts.

While the uppers provide us with the coverage needed for charging all-mountain and gravity lines, we think the magic in the Keegan lies in its sole construction. Underneath the molded foam insole is a mono-directional interior shank. That's a fancy way of saying that the midsole provides flex in one direction, but not both —meaning when you put pressure on your pedals your shoe doesn't flex over the edge of the pedal, but when you hit the trail on foot it provides natural flex that your foot needs to dig in tread and climb. Outside, the sole is constructed with Afton's proprietary Intact rubber, that boasts a Shore A of 60, meaning its durable and long lasting to stand up to the rough bolts of flat pedals, but still provides some tacky grip to ensure you're not slipping around.

  • Fresh shoes for shredding on flats
  • Synthetic leather uppers shed mud and water
  • Anti-odor foam insole supports heel and arch
  • Perforated lateral and toe area allows breathing
  • Protect your feet with reinforced toe box
  • Proprietary Intact rubber is durable and grippy
  • Mono-directional shank flexes for walking, not under pedals

Unanswered Question

Do the Afton Keegans run small, and how big is the toe box? I'm looking for shoes for flats that won't squeeze my toes and my bunion.

Not a bike shoe...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought some Keegan shoes to try something new after my 3rd pair of FiveTens wore out. Not a fan of FiveTens ; they have never been particularly comfortable or long lasting, but they absolutely work. The "Stelath" rubber bites into the pedal and sticks tenaciously, but wears out after about 5 months. They would give a solid, reliable connection to the pedal. I use Hope F20s, which have pretty sharp pins.

Two rides in with the Keegans, and I am very disappointed. VERY little grip on the pedals with these shoes. Unsettling and gives me little confidence that my feet will stay on the pedals through the rocky, steep downhill sections we have here in Phoenix AZ. I find my foot bouncing and shifting often. Furthermore, after only 2 rides, I already see small chunks of rubber coming off of the sole. The hard edges of the concave areas on the sole are going to wear far faster than the circles on a FiveTen sole.

However, the Keegans are far more comfortable than any FiveTen I've had (Freeriders and Impacts). They also look great, which is good, because these have no business being used as a bike shoe and will be relegated to casual wear only.

Great casual shoe, but worthless for me as a bike shoe. Still searching for a worthy alternative to FiveTens.
