Description

Under the radar.

Your liner may not be the most glamorous part of your biking kit, and it's probably not something you spend a lot of time getting excited about. As long as it's comfortable, you're happy. 7mesh Industries understands, and it also knows that late season kit almost never comes with a removable liner, so it created the Foundation Men's Bib Short to be your go-to next-to-skin layer when you're suiting up for a cold, rainy day on the roads or trails.

Specifically designed to be used with 7mesh's Strata line of knickers and tights, the Foundation works as a liner with just about any set of baggies you want to pair it with. Wheel spray and aggressive rain drops won't stand a chance at sneaking under your shell and soaking you with the Foundation's DWR finish, and the short's polyester knit mesh main body will continuously wick moisture as you warm up in the cold, with minimal seaming to cause chafing. If you do use the liner with 7mesh's Strata kit, it's compatible with the brand's gClip design, which allows you to link a tight with a liner using only one set of bib straps, keeping bulk at a minimum. A plush Elastic Interface chamois provides cushion and support whether you spend 40 frigid minutes on the trails or log a long endurance-building ride on the roads.

  • Layer this cold-weather liner under all of your tights
  • Form-fitting silhouette meant to be worn as a baselayer
  • DWR finish repels water on wetter days
  • Moisture-wicking fabric works to keep you cool and dry
  • Wide elastic leg grippers secure the short without pinching
  • Soft bib straps integrate with other 7mesh kit

pleasantly surprised by these shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I bought them because they were on sale and because they're "liner" bibs.

I have a couple of pair of gravel shorts that I'd prefer to wear bibs under on occasion. I also have a pair of pad-less winter tights that I wear bibs with, so I thought I'd get quite a bit of use from these, and in fact I do.

In the case of the gravel shorts, I've worn other bibs under them and the thicker fabric of traditional bib shorts can get a bit warm. It seemed to me that a dedicate "liner" bib was just the ticket.

The fabric of the 7mesh shorts is lightweight, though not a "mesh" by any means. It's not see through or anything, and in a pinch I suppose you could wear these shorts as a regular pair of bibs with nothing over the top. The one thing detracting from that is the way the pad is sewn in leaves the seam exposed externally which gives it a bit of "diaper" like visibility, but it's not really that bad, especially while on the bike. If, for example, my gravel shorts got soaked for some reason, I'd have no issues with stripping down to just the 7mesh bibs and riding like that until my baggy shorts dried.

All that said, I'm pleasantly surprised by these shorts. the suspenders are light and some of the most comfortable I own, and the chamois is a personal favorite. It's not particularly thick, but is made of a denser, springier foam than either the castelli or rapha chamois I'm comparing it with, and the padding is particularly well placed. All in all I'm impressed with the engineering in this short, especially the chamois, and will look to 7mesh in the future for other products.
