Where the trail, cross-country, and enduro single-tracks all merge, you'll find the illusive Yeti SB5+ Carbon GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike 2018 patiently waiting for you to climb aboard and send it in every direction imaginable. With the versatility of the SB5 you'll find that the SB5+ is hungry to gobble up trails, but with geometry tweaks that enable it to ride as a true plus-bike, with ample tire clearance for supple support of up to a 3-inch tire to dominate loose banked corners and precarious rock gardens.
While overall frame geometry stayed quite consistent between the SB5 and the Plus, it's notable that the rear triangle saw a major redesign with elevated chainstays that allows for increased rigidity and tire clearance. Still maintaining short and snappy a rear end, the elevation of the chainstays simply takes them up and out of the way with an arc that increases clearance space while keeping the stays at 17.2-inches for quick power transfer and nimble handling.
Staying close to the rear end, you'll find the switch infinity rear suspension design that effortlessly transitions through travel for a buttery-smooth ride. With a translating pivot it switches directions to move through your travel as you ride, maximizing anti-squat characteristics so you don't lose power in your pedal stroke. The linear path of the system moves with little resistance, allowing small bump sensitivity and pedaling efficiency in the beginning of the travel, but soaks deeper when further into the travel to take square edge hits and drops with ease. When paired with Fox's Performance DPS rear shock with 127mm of travel you'll find a capable trail bike with 5-inches of play-ready suspension hungry for techy tree lines and rock gardens. And for those gnarly and steep tree lines, Yeti's engineers set you up with a slacked out 67.1-degree head tube angle that feels planted and bombproof, with confidence inspiring geometry that's eager to devour the descents.
Because a versatile bike can't be made out of not-so versatile materials, Yeti puts forward their high-modulus carbon fiber for lightweight and stiff durability to keep you going. Weighing in at about 25-grams heavier than their Turq level carbon, Yeti's Carbon series uses a slightly lower grade carbon fiber than the Turq, which adds a little bit of weight, but still boasts strength and stiffness that feel smooth, solid, and aggressive on the mountain. By opting for the changes in carbon, Yeti is able to offer more aggressive price points in their Carbon series frames.
Perhaps there isn't a more fitting pairing than a Carbon series frame with SRAM's GX Eagle groupset. Much like the carbon of the SB5+ Carbon series, GX eagle groupset features the same pivotal technology and flawless shifting of the X01 and XX1 eagle, but with price-saving materials that come in a bit heavier than its counterparts. Still offering a 10-50-tooth cassette range, we're happy with the huge range of available gears, and the ever-present bail out cog for painstaking fire roads and long, technical climbs that require an escape when the going gets a bit too punchy. The supple 150mm of travel offered by the Fox Performance 34 helps you float down the mountain, and with 34mm stanchions you'll find tracking to be precise and stable from XC laps to chunky rock gardens. The plus-specific fork allows for clearance of up to a 3-inch tire, just as in the back, which allows for exceptional tread-to-trail contact for secure descents, ultimate grip in loose corners, and running lower PSI to offer a plush feel.
