Silence. That's all Dr. Allen Lim heard when he knew he had arrived at a solution. No longer were his Garmin riders complaining of the headaches and bloated stomachs that had plagued them for so long. Lim had spent countless hours mixing formulas in buckets to create not a product, but a solution that was informally dubbed Secret Drink Mix, or SDM. Why a secret? Unlike many sports drinks, which are formulated around electrolyte or caloric replenishment during physical exertion, the Exercise Mix focuses on keeping your body's sodium levels carefully regulated. Lim discovered that the rampant headaches plaguing his pro riders were not induced by a lack of fluids, but rather, a lack of sodium -- a very typical symptom of dehydration. Essentially, your kidneys regulate fluid retention based on the body's concentration of sodium. When sodium concentration is high, your body is forced to hold on to that fluid to dilute it. But when your sodium levels get too low (ie: through sweat loss), the opposite happens and your kidneys must expel that fluid. 

Lim's mix is designed to keep your body's sodium balance carefully regulated, maintaining hydration while also slowing diuresis. With diuresis slowed, you'll be able to pre-hydrate and drink more before a race without needing to make those three inopportune bathroom breaks right before your call-up. If these concepts around a sodium-based formula sound familiar, that's because they are -- Lim's drink mix contains nearly four times the amount of sodium in many convenience-store sports drinks, putting it on par with emergency-grade rehydration salt formulas like Pedialyte, and those used by the World Health Organization to combat severe dehydration.

The athletes that helped Lim develop the Exercise Mix weren't just complaining of headaches. They were also suffering from severe stomach bloating and flavor fatigue. The second half of Lim's solution was to ensure his drink was easy and pleasurable to consume day in and day out. To accomplish this, every ingredient from the Exercise Mix is naturally occurring or naturally sourced from real fruit, which ensures you're not putting anything in your body that's been chemically formulated or enhanced. In short, if it wasn't here on this earth before you were, Dr. Lim and his team refused to use it. 

The ingredients are: sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, freeze dried fruit, citric acid (a natural preservation agent from pure lime juice), and ascorbic acid. Notice the pronounced absence of the 'natural flavors' found in so many other sports drinks. Part of what makes the Exercise Mix so uniquely palatable even during prolonged periods of exercise and constant re-hydration is the lack of a savoring agent. The Exercise Mix uses real lemons, limes, oranges, and raspberries, which are freeze-dried and pounded into powder. This creates a refreshing, super-clean flavor that's easy on your stomach without a lingering aftertaste that wears out its welcome halfway into your race. It means you're not just getting a 'flavor' of lemon or orange, you're getting actual lemons and oranges in the mix. Lim and his team created two drink mixes, optimizing each for different levels of physical exertion. This Exercise Hydration Mix has a slightly higher salt content, making it Skratch Labs' on-bike mix, best used for periods when your heart rate is up and you're sweating. No More Nausea!

Sometimes after really good, hard long runs I get really nauseous and a couple of times I've even fainted. After doing some research and blood tests I found out I'm extremely hypoglycemic and obviously not hydrating properly DURING long runs. I emphasize during because as I've always raced competitively where I'd run with as little gear as possible and drank water or gatorade after a race or workout, never during. Now that I'm not racing and I'm out there on trail runs or long runs for 2+ hours, I feel much better if I'm hydrating throughout my run rather than just after, refueling as I go rather than waiting to hit rock bottom and trying to recover after. I've avoided these drink mixes for a long time because I have a really sensitive stomach but also because there are so many out there that I was overwhelmed with all the choices. If you feel the same way, get the Skratch packets to try out and then assuming you like them get the big bag. I haven't had any stomach issues from these so far! I run with an Ultimate Direction pack and depending on my mood I either put the Skratch in soft bottles or in a bladder. Right now I have the pineapple flavor and I really like it. My favorite is raspberry and sometimes to switch things up I mix flavors, raspberry lemon is really tasty!

    I've used many hydration mixes including Coke and water, but have found that the Skratch Hydration is, by far, the most effective mix. The combination of essential salts and low non-essential additives such as coloring agents, allows for a quicker absorption and effectiveness. A big fan of lemon-lime flavors, so that has been my go to.

      By far my favorite hydration mix. Flavors are delicious but subtle which is great when you're fatigued and in need of hydration. I have yet to find a flavor that Skratch offers that I don't like.

      Hydrate or Die

        Skratch is legit, use this prior to long ski tours or rides on the bike. Usually just drink water while I'm out, but if it's going to be a long day I'll throw some skratch in my bottles.

        Skratch is refreshingly simple stuff that gets the job done. Pretty much just powdered dehydrated fruit and salt, with well balanced flavors. Love the matcha and lemons and pineapple flavors. Not crazy about the raspberry flavor.

        I've used many hydration products over the years and Skratch hands-down works, and tastes, the best. Great, natural ingredients and no weird aftertaste.

        Perfect for Sensitive Stomachs

        I have lots of stomach issues when I race or ride hard but the Skratch products seem to be easier to digest. Hydration is key and Skratch is my first choice for hydration/calories on the bike. Don't really love the raspberry flavor (I love raspberries normally) but all the others are delicious.

          I normally just drink water and supplement with gels and shot blocks but for those mid-summer rides keeping a bottle of skratch around helps stave off the cramps.

          Good for training, not so much for races

            I've been using Skratch Labs products for quite some time, and I dig their products. This year, while competing in the NY Triathlon Relay, Skratch couldn't quite hold up to the rigors. I cramped up majorly right before making it back to transition, and had to hop with my bike to the transition area. To it's defense, I still managed to race at 1.4 mph faster than last year. But, I can't say I feel confident that it will meet my demands in the future. But it's great during training.

              Great taste, not too sweet, easy on the stomach, great on the bike fuel. I struggle with IBS issues so I've tried all sorts of nutrition drinks for cycling and Skratch is currently my go to. The Matcha Tea is my favorite but I would drink any flavor.
