Why We Like The Ultegra BR-R8000 Brake Calipers

There's no motorsport discipline where skimping on brakes in considered an acceptable practice, so why would you do it on your bike? If you're building up a new bike or looking to improve braking performance of an existing one, the Ultegra BR-R8000 Brake Calipers provide the performance of Shimano's premier group at a price that is palatable. Increasing power and creating a more predictable, linear brake path marks some of the exciting refinements on the new Ultegra brakes—and, considering that there's no rosy alternative to stopping with brakes, we're not at all embarrassed to call refinements in brake technology exciting.

Receiving trickle-down technology from Dura-Ace calipers, the R8000 calipers are designed for R9100 and R8000 series dual control levers, but will work equally well with 11-speed levers from previous Ultegra and Dura-Ace groups that are designed to pull cable ratios required for SLR-EV calipers.

These brakes receive the same angular shapes that define the rest of the Ultegra group, especially the cranks. These lines not only offer a more muscular look, they also help create better aerodynamics and increase rigidity, thus improving power. A stabilizer spanning larger pivots acts as a brace and prevents any torsional flex, creating better brake sensitivity and modulation. The new R8000 also clears tires up to 28mm, which is quickly becoming our go-to width for riding tarmac and makes for a more comfortable and efficient ride by better managing imperfections in the road surface.

Just like the brakes in the 9100 Dura-Ace group, the brake release lever moves to a closed position in-line with the arch of the caliper, helping to improve aerodynamics. (We love the irony of brakes that make you faster.) The lever is easy to open on-the-fly if you're eyeing a 1,300-watt romp to the line and want to make sure the pads don't rub the rim. If a pre-finale puncture threatens your chances of winning from the break, a barrel adjuster allows for quick adjustment of cable tension if you get a wider or narrower rim from neutral support.

Pivoting pad cartridges allows for easy adjustment and the R55C4 included pads are designed for alloy rims. The better feel and power afforded by these new calipers add confidence when scrubbing speed down a long mountain descent and may have you questioning if the added weight of disc brakes is even needed on road bikes.

  • Race-tier brake calipers for the self-sponsored cyclist
  • Provide a more predictable, linear braking curve
  • Dual-pivot caliper applies even pressure from both sides
  • Larger pivots reduce flex for better modulation
  • Adjustable cartridge pad holders empower home mechanics
  • Clears tires up to 28mm for improved comfort and rolling efficiency

Ultegra Makeover

I've used it several times
True to size
Size Bought
6` 2"
170 lbs

This was the final item to add to an old 105 bike I have. I might have left them, but they were Tektro’s that wouldn’t open up enough to even take a 25c easily. After the change I found how much more adjustability there is in the Ultegra brakes, as well as the ability to fit a 28c tire in there without letting the air out first - although I still run 25c. Must I mention how much better these look? Across the performance range isn’t quite like using a gloved hand compared to driving a stick trough the spokes, but combined with the new STI shifters it sort of felt like it.

The Ultegra BR-R8000 Brake Calipers set for $147.99 that I received are for front and rear rim brakes. The two brakes in the box have the same part number "BR - R8000" so, the front and rear brakes use the same brake caliper and not front and rear brake specific, correct?

Hi Kwok, you are correct, the calipers are identical between the front and back.

Well on the picture the brake calipers seems black, but the only choice seems to be gray. Which colour is the good one ?

Upgrade for rebuild

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased these brakes for rebuild and upgrade of my wife's bike. The installation and adjustment was easy. They have great stopping power and they even look stylish. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Great Brakes!

I've used it several times

I used the previous version for five years and loved those so decided to spring for these as an upgrade on another bike. They are light, they stop really really well, are easy to set up and adjust and are a great looking brake set. I highly recommend them.

Shimano Ultegra brakes!

Shimano is the best part for the price out there!

Which brakes offer better clearance for a 28c tire? Shimano BR-R8000 or BR-R9100 or the new Campagnolo 12 Super Record/Record

R8000 and R9100 both clear a 28mm wheelset. I have an R8000 and a 28mm wheel. As far as the Campagnolo I don’t know.

Stops on a dime

I've used it several times

I was working my way through slowly upgrading my bike to Ultegra r8000 and decide to go for new brakes since the price for the pair was what others charge for just one caliper. 500 wish miles in they stop very well and have decent fine control of braking power. I am running them on 25mm gp4000 on 17mm internal width rims and they clear just fine. about a week ago a truck made a left turn in front of me about 20 yards away where I was going about 24 ish mph. I defiantly was able to stop faster than I anticipated and didn't run into the side of a car so I'm defiantly happy with them and have a good amount of confidence in there braking abilities. Oh and they look dam good to with there combo of matte and glossy black/grey color

Will these work with Tiagra 4700 levers?

Hi Sebastian, Shimano's brake compatibility get's confusing but yes, these R8000 calipers will work with 4700 levers.

Are these compatible with Shimano Ultegra 6800 levers?

Hi John, yes you should be able to use these with 6800 levers.

Immense Stopping power.

I've put it through the wringer

So far 200+ miles put on these brakes. Great improvement over the brakes that came with my bike. Stopping power is great. I have yet to feel that I have it the limit and I have had to perform a few emergency maneuvers already. They do look great on my bike.

Ultegra r8000 brake calipers

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These brakes have lots of stopping power for being cable actuated. I put these on a bmc road bike and they work great with the shimano rs-500 wheelset.

Sorry to hear they didn't work out, but I really appreciate the feedback. Let me know if you want to return them and I'll email you a free return label.

Thanks for providing the specific tire information. Very useful given the claim that 28mm tires can fit.

I have the same problem with the same tire on my Specialized Roubaix. If you get aggressive they'll pull through the brake pads, but I don't think that's the intent.

the forks of the brakes come the pair or a single
