SH-XC5 Cycling Shoe
If Shimano's SH-XC5 mountain bike shoes were an animal, they would most likely be a tiger. Why? Because, like tigers, they are tough, resilient, and adaptable, they excel in many different regions of the world and can seamlessly transition from one environment to the other. Like tigers, they also come in shades of black, orange, and grey. Coincidence? We're not entirely sure, but they definitely move from XC single track, to gravel road, and CX courses in a way not unlike a tiger transitioning seamlessly from the snow covered mountains of Siberia to the dense jungles of India.
To achieve this versatility, Shimano's designers used top materials, like synthetic leather uppers that give your foot a snug hug, featuring perforated venting to keep you from overheating, and lightweight carbon fiber reinforced insoles to stiffen your shoe without excessive weight. The lace-up closure is always reliable, and essentially future-proof, with no finicky boas to break mid ride from a blow against a rock, and it is reinforced with a mini power-strap to securely hold the lacing in place and offer additional support.
Underneath it all, exclusive Michelin high-traction, mud-shedding rubber makes up the outsole, ready to dominate in many conditions, whether you're 30 miles deep on a road to nowhere, lapping your local single track, or throwing your steed over shoulder to hurdle over rivers and logs at a cyclocross race. With an anti-slip arch outsole pattern, you'll feel secure and you'll receive extra support underfoot, and control laying down power on the pedals. Reinforced spike mounts are there for you when you need to ride in more extreme conditions.
- Versatile shoes for XC to CX to Gravel riding
- Perforated synthetic uppers are supportive and breathe
- Carbon-fiber reinforced midsole ads stiffness, not weight
- Future-proof laces are reinforced with a power strap
- Michelin rubber backs up the outsole with tacky grip
- Reinforced spike mounts for extreme conditions
- 2-bolt MTB cleat specific mounting
- Extra laces are included for color swapping

Yesssss finally a shoe that fits!!!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Fit:
- Runs small
I tried on 15-20 pairs of shoes at different shops and online retailers. Every other shoe I tried was too narrow around the widest part of my foot, and/or the lacing system cut into my foot right by the tongue. This was a real problem with any BOA lacing systems and especially the side closure type of shoes. These shoes looked a little funny but I thought I'd give them a try because of the old school lacing system. They are fantastic - really comfortable but still stiff thanks to the carbon reinforced sole. I got these on clearance sale and the materials and construction were way, way better quality than any of the other shoes I tried in the $75-150 price range. If you're having the same fit issues that I had, then I can't recommend them highly enough. It fits slightly small (off by 1 size in EUR, or half a size in US).

Awesome shoes for the price ***update***
- Familiarity:

- True to size
- Size Bought
- 47

Got these on sale and was happy with the purchase. They were my first clip ins and i paired with the Crank Bros Candy1 pedals on my mountain bike and Crank Bros Eggbeaters on my road/gravel bike. Fit: I wear size 12 shoes so using the size chart i chose the size 47 pair. They fit great, with a little bit of space so that when my feet get hot and expand i wont get blisters. ***Update after 6 months and over 2000 miles of road, gravel, and mountain biking*** They held up pretty well! After thousands of miles my feet never cramped or got numb, and the only damage to the shoes is some of the rubber is peeling from the front. I could easily fix it with some shoe goo in 5 minutes but I don't mind it. Ill probably buy these again as a solid training/durable pair of shoes.

Great shoe for the money
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
These were my first set of mtb shoes and have gone great for me! Iâm a 10-10.5 menâs shoes regularly and took a pair of 44s and they run maybe slightly large but thatâs about the only flaw for me. I love walking around in these as the cleat lies almost flush with the sole and make very little noise meaning that as laced shoes, they donât look out of place at a bbq or bar but they also can sustain a good shred. I live near a sweet little gravel track and they have been getting a lot of use. A lot of dismounting and walking up too steep of steps to ride up, scraping on brush and sunlight exposure. Approx a couple of dozen rides in these and theyâve been awesome. And I think I paid closer to $115 when the orange color was on sale and thatâs a massive bargain for what you get. I live when you get a good buy like that!

Runs small
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
This is my fifth pair of Shimano mtb shoes and I've always wore a 42. These were too small. And what's with Shimano not shipping SPD cleats anymore? I think that happened on my last pair as well . Anyway, construction looks solid as usual.

Very elegant, light and comfortable
Having to tuck laces in might be annoying, but you only have to do it once, and they will remain in place.

Do you or anyone know of any reports of the shoe lace holder strap(s) breaking over time due to weather and wear.

I had been riding with midrange ($175+/-) mountain shoes with spd or road shoes with sls cleats, depending on which bike. Both of those shoes caused uneven fit-Velcro straps not tight enough, ratcheting buckle not particularly comfortable. These shoes solve all of those problems, no looseness, no pressure points, just snug and comfortable with room for the toes. As for walking, they’re also comfortable and safe. Now, both of my bikes are XT-M8000, easy in/out. I didn’t much care for the super long laces, so I switched to Iron Laces, which work good and are tidy.

Do you or anyone know of any reports of the "shoe lace strap holders" over the shoe tongue breaking over time due to weather and wear?
