Rotor's new Uno groupset has been enjoying a lot of attention for its 100% hydraulic approach to shift and brake actuation, which is every bit as iconoclastic as the brand's signature oval chainring shape. The Uno 11-Speed Cassette, by contrast, is slightly more traditional; however, it does depart from the status quo in some pretty significant ways. First, it's comically light. With a paltry claimed weight of 149g for an 11-28t model, the Uno's cog cluster is lighter than any cassette from the big three road component manufacturers.
While Rotor doesn't make specific claims to this effect, we're assuming that the secret to the low weight lies in machining (the Spanish brand's specialty) and material choice. Rotor opts for a mix of aluminum for the larger cogs and steel for the smaller ones, shaving weight where it won't impact durability by using the softer metal on cogs where there're more teeth to bear the load. The aluminum teeth also enjoy some Iberian flair courtesy of Rotor's graphical branding, which is the other significant departure from tradition. It may not be for everyone, but the branded granny gears really tie the drivetrain together when paired with similarly branded Q-rings up front.
Every bit of the cassette is shaped, milled, and polished at Rotor's Spanish headquarters, a rarity in today's outsource-heavy industry. The cogs are also treated with a friction-reducing finish before rolling out of Spain. Though it's lighter than its Italian, Japanese, and US competition, Rotor claims that the Uno Cassette is still compatible with all three. The unique machining that is done on the Uno Cassette even pushes a step further to add compatibility to 10-speed Shimano freehubs, making upgrades to your drivetrain that much easier.
