The last several years of professional road racing have been great to Pinarello. Tour after tour — most notably that famous French one — has watched the company’s champion steeds cross finish lines first, second, third, or all of the above, and with a remarkable consistency that’s hard to ignore. The 2015 Pinarello ROKH Ultegra Complete Road Bike takes the supremacy of one of its top-tier breadwinners — the Classics-crushing KOBH — and distills it into an affordable package that lets us experience the advantages that those professionals get.
Let’s look at the ROKH frame, but first, at Pinarello’s frame hierarchy. Most bike manufacturers these days offer its pro riders a more comfortable, forgiving frame option for particularly long, brutal stages or one-day races. This back-friendlier version is usually based strongly on the company's most high-performance frameset, but with slight geometry and construction tweaks to favor comfort. For example, Pinarello’s top-tog Dogma is the company’s most popularly employed race weapon, but the KOBH is whipped out when the Dogma’s aggressive geometry and handling would be simply too much for a 100+ mile day of elbow-rubbing. Relative to the Dogma, the KOBH features an elongated wheelbase, softened seatstays, and more slack head tube angle that all conspire to create a more relaxed machine, delaying fatigue and keeping riders sharper longer.
Well, the ROKH frameset can be described simply as a more affordable KOBH frameset, utilizing the same molds but a slightly lesser grade of carbon for the main triangle and fork — yet one that’s still more advanced than most of the competition at this price point. The 30HM1K carbon used in the ROKH is less expensive and isn’t as dense as the KOBH’s 60HM1K carbon, so more of it must be used to achieve the same levels of strength, but that’s the only practical difference. The sole penalty riders will observe is that of a slight weight gain over the KOBH, because all of the KOBH’s performance characteristics are beautiful preserved in the ROKH.
And complementing them is this bike’s excellent build kit. Shimano’s Ultegra 6800 drivetrain is applied in its entirety — no skimping was done by stocking a lesser chain, for example. It’s the most current version of Ultegra, a system that nearly achieves the same quality and low weight as the company’s ultimate Dura-Ace drivetrain, only for less dough. Pinarello’s in-house MOst componentry comprises the cockpit, and you roll on all-Italian roundness: Vittoria Zaffiro Pro tires wrapped around Fulcrum Racing 5 wheels — an overachieving combination that will also last through years of abuse.
The 2015 Pinarello ROKH Ultegra Complete Road Bike is available in sizes 43, 46, 49, 52, 53.5, 55, and 57cm, and in the colors Black/red, Black/white, and White/red.
