It's ok if you double-take and zoom in, yes, that's a drop-bar out front of this full-suspension Niner MCR RDO 2-Star GRX Gravel Bike. According to Niner, there's no need to ask why they breathed to life this gravel shredder when a full-squish mountain-bike or hardtail seemingly covers the performance range of the MCR RDO — and in some cases more. The reason is that Niner's original goal, when founded, was to make "riding on dirt a better experience, period." Drop-bar off-road bikes have a certain appeal as they blend in the deep country and back to the cityscapes with ease and effortlessly live in the rowdy zone between the two. But how can Niner improve the shortcomings of rigid drop bar frames to ride the way the adventure explorer desires? The answer is to give squish to the front and rear.
The MCR RDO is a drop-bar bike, yet the heart is in the gravel-tuned CVA (Constantly Varying Arch) suspension. It provides the best characteristics of uphill climbing stability, downhill confidence, and control in every situation in between. Specifically tuned for more seated gravelin conditions, Niner aims to have the full 50mm of travel utilized compared to the bottom-out resistance of its mountain bike line. The result is travel that helps you pedal faster through the routes you have been riding and opens up the trails you'd like to explore, giving a sensitive and compliant ride across all conditions.
In front, you'll find a Fox 32 fork with 40mm of travel to handle nose-first drop-ins and the root and rock gardens you've wanted to ride at speed. The capable and reliable Shimano GRX400 group with hydraulic disc brakes provides a familiar and comfortable 10-speed shifting and braking experience.
Niner uses an integrated fender with an optional bolt-on extension to add more coverage if you find yourself riding on the edge of control more often than enjoying a slow gear-hauling jaunt. Giving you room to explore both the racing edge and the bikepacking epics, the MCR RDO fits 700 x 50mm and 650b x 2.0in tires for healthy room to ride further and with more grip than a standard drop-bar rig. An impressive amount of frame mounts integrates to the MCR RDO to fit all manner of bags, bottles, and racks to venture far and wide, confident that you have the gear you need to enjoy the journey.
