Any trail, any time.
Few bikes have the ability to bounce between XC duties and a fun everyday trail bike quite like the Jet 9. It's just as happy jumping in a midweek cross-country race and tackling a backwood epic with your buddies on the weekend. While many will remember the Jet moniker as an XC machine, Niner decided to create the RKT as a dedicated cross country racer and make the Jet a bit more trail friendly by relaxing the angles for a bit more confidence while sending it down burlier trails and helping to increase your speed and confidence. It still retains the agility from its XC race roots and blends the ever-growing demand for longer and lower geometry for more fun up and down the mountain. If this sounds like the bike for you, throw a leg over the JET 9 RDO 27.5+ 2-Star Complete Mountain Bike and enjoy a plush ride with the added benefit of increased traction with big tires.
With a name like Niner Bikes, it's easy to see what wheel diameter its founders favored, however, it would be at least a solid decade before plus wheels and tires would emerge. It turns out that plus tires are pretty darn close to that of a 29er, so the geometry and suspension platforms that Niner tirelessly worked on and optimized for bigger wheels, works well for this application too. This 2-Star GX Eagle can obviously swap back and forth between sizes and we think having a plus setup for trail and a 29er for racing isn't a bad idea. It comes stock with Niner's own 27.5+ alloy hoops, so you get the high volume and traction hungry footprint and Boost 148mm rear hub spacing with its wider hub flanges creates the space for either wheel size and the ability to shrink the chainstays. Coming in at just 434mm, they tuck the rear wheel up underneath you, so you'll find better climbing traction and agility for flicking the bike through tight switchbacks and trees.
As we mentioned above, the Niner Jet 9 RDO frame moved from a more dedicated XC race whippet to a better all-around trail bike for endurance events and post work hot laps at the bike park. An additional 20mm of travel was added to the Continuously Varying Arc (CVA) rear suspension, bringing the total to 120mm, and again the ability to swap back and forth between 29er and 27.5+ wheels. The headtube is also more relaxed, the seattube steeper, and the reach just a bit rangier giving the Jet 9 a more point and shoot demeanor than in previous years. If you're more likely to don a heart rate strap and shave your legs, have a look at the RKT as it has stepped in as it's new go-to for an XC race machine.
Niner's Constant Varying Arc suspension climbs efficiently without losing that smooth and bottomless feel we've come to expect. The CVA platform, along with FOX's Float DPS Performance Evol rear shock, soaks up all the trail imperfections with its 4.7-inches of plush travel that devours rock gardens and roots with ease. CVA works by using chain tension to pull the bottom link down as you pedal, avoiding bob, while the top linkage is free to move and respond to bumps and impacts along the way up.
Complimenting CVA and the FOX Float DPS rear shock is a FOX Float 34 Rhythm fork, with 140mm of travel for soaking up impacts and drops on the trail. The 34mm stanchions offer torsional and lateral rigidity for sure high-speed tracking on rough terrain. This particular build is designed around the 27.5+ wheel size, making a 140mm fork appropriate for its geometry, and Niner recommends swapping to a 130mm fork and removing the 15mm lower headset cup if you go 29 unless you prefer a slacker feel. This 2-star GX build get SRAM's GX Eagle drivetrain, which offers a massive 10-50-tooth 12-speed cassette. Eagle offers a gear for any climb or descent, with a huge bailout cog for those super steep or extended climbs when you always wish you had an extra gear. SRAM's GX Eagle has the DNA of its XX1 and X01 groups, but with a slight weight penalty and huge price savings, making Eagle more attainable to those on a budget.
The lightweight RDO carbon that makes up the Jet 9 RDO is resilient and designed to create a durable singletrack slayer. Niner's method of carbon layup manages to squeeze out excess resin during the molding process, which reduces any pooling, or voids, and maintains precision when it comes to thickness and construction creating strength while losing weight. The frame has ports for internal cable routing for clean lines and less contamination. A shorter stem and wider bars enable quick handling while keeping your weight further back, so going over the bars are far less likely to happen.
Few bikes have the ability to bounce between XC duties and a fun everyday trail bike quite like the Jet 9. It's just as happy jumping in a midweek cross-country race and tackling a backwoods epic with your buddies on the weekend.
