Matrix 2.0 Balaclava

Your face's only real job on the bike is catching wind. In warm months, this isn't an issue, but when the temperature drops between November and March it becomes somewhat problematic. Because it feels like our faces work overtime catching wind in winter, we opt for the Louis Garneau Matrix 2.0 Balaclava in cold-weather conditions.

Its Matrix 2.0 fabric is laid out in different zones to offer protection from the cold air and breathability to keep you comfortable. It stretches and conforms so you can pull it on easily but it still covers snugly with no extra bulk. The 4-way stretch knit reduces chafing by keeping seams to a minimum, and the grey and black color scheme and understated logo on the brow mean you won't resemble a rolling billboard.

  • A cold-weather face guard to get you through the wind chill
  • Matrix 2.0 fabric is paid in zones to protect from cold
  • Stretchy fit conforms to your face without bulk
  • Breathable materials pull away moisture and dry quickly
  • Understated logo keeps your aesthetic sharp and stealthy

Works well

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Very comfortable at 32 degrees; better than the neck gaiter I had been pulling up over my face.
I may purchase a castelli or gore for colder weather since they use some wind proof fabric.
The LG is quite good, though.

Slides off the forehead

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I have a large head, none the less this otherwise beautiful piece slides upwards and off my forehead. Probably fine with a helmet holding it down, but I need to use it for more than cycling.

Excellent light weight balaclava

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I get cold easily, but ride year round. I have all manner of balaclavas, from white for summer use (I'm allergic to sunscreen), to a heavy wool balaclava for the coldest of days. The Garneau Matrix Balaclava is lightweight and good for temperatures into the high 40s. I've also used it as a base layer under a scarf.

It's practical but not magical

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: MEidum

This is a comfortable balaclava. The best one I've ever used for cycling. But it's not leap and bounds above anything I've ever used. It's just a bit more comfortable and doesn't overheat my scalp or make it itchy which a lot of other balaclavas do.

Balaclava for cyclists

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: One Size

This is a great product so far, I really enjoy having my ears stay warm when I cycle in the colder times of the year. The best part about this item is the different layers used in the construction. Breathable vents for the mouth, forehead and temples and collarbones. Unlike other balaclavas, this no is not invasion towards your visibility while cycling with it.

I have a fairly big head and it fits we pretty well because it is stretchy enough.

Great product and well made.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This balaclava I use for cycling under my helmet and it stops sweat from running into my eyes and also keeps my face protected under full-faced helmet use. Bought 2 of these. The seamless construction is amazing.

just what the situation called for

We have had some pretty low temps this season and i'm a bike commuter so stingy cheeks, icy numb eyebrows, along with raw blades of air assaulting my lungs / asthma.

Most Balaclavas are far too heavy for my liking and i hate the scarf mummy idea for cycling. The lightness of this more technical fabric appealed to me. It's perfect in weight and ,does the trick. I stow it in its plastic sac in my pac and it's there when i need it.

Unique. Fantastic. Yes.

Garneau is based in Quebec, Canada and they understand cold-weather cycling.

I love this balaclava for one very specific reason: it is thin and super lightweight.

This is actually a good thing! This allows you to use this balaclava in the 40s and even the 50s.

Why is this useful? Riding in the 40s or even in the 50s in the Winter with overcast skies and no sunshine (and for serious roadies: bombing down a cold canyon descent) with your face fully exposed will make your face sting and turn red. Why do we do this to ourselves? There is no reason. This balaclava completely solves this problem.

I also love this LG balaclava because...

*The stretchy face opening gives you over-mouth, over-chin, or under the chin options. Your choice. Brilliant.

*Excellent quality and value -per usual from Louis Garneau.

Tips for use: Though temperature sensitivity is individual... because this balaclava is thin, when riding around 45-50° F, you will probably want to add a light to mid-weight thermal cap on top. When riding below 40° F for sure add a "Windstopper" thermal cap (by Castelli, Gore, or Craft) on top; and/or a helmet cover (by Garneau or Gore) to "close" the vents on your helmet for better thermal protection (and better aerodynamics).

Add this inexpensive balaclava to your winter kit system and ride in much more comfort and happiness.

    Well-made, good fit.

This is a quality piece that is then and would fit under your helmet nicely. You could even layer a windproof piece on top of it.
