Grip the ground.
Mountain bike shoes seem to come in two categories: those with ultra-stiff soles that provide excellent power transfer but terrible grip when you're forced to hike-a-bike, or soft-soled gravity shoes that feel like you're pedaling with slippers on your feet. Not to mention, women's cycling shoes are often treated with inferior construction and materials. Giro took a look at the available options and effectively combined the best of everything into its Terradura Women's Mountain Shoes.
To begin with, Giro didn't use ultra-stiff carbon for the sole. Instead, it used a robust nylon shank. This allows for some flexibility while walking. If you've ever tried to scale boulders in carbon-soled cycling shoes, you've undoubtedly pulled your heels out a few times — a softer sole prevents this from happening. But, Giro didn't stop there. They added a Vibram rubber outsole with flex engineering in the forefoot. Heavy Vibram lugs securely grip mud, logs, and rocks — or whatever else the trail throws at you. The uppers were constructed from a soft, flexible microfiber that has been tailored to fit a narrower woman's foot. The microfiber features perforations so that your feet are able to breathe. The footbed is molded EVA with a medium arch support. It was treated with an antimicrobial coating to keep bacteria at bay. Padding around the achilles keeps your heel from slipping, and a reinforced toe box provides impact protection where it's needed most.
The Terraduras are secured with replaceable ratcheting buckles, as well as two hook-and-loop closures. An offset D-ring at the midfoot strap holds the uppers against the foot for added support. They are compatible with 2-hole mountain bike cleats.
